Truck-Lite LED Headlamps--was the upgrade worth it?

I know last year several of you upgraded LED headlights. I am darn close to ordering a set (the 27270C models) and I wanted to know if you found those worth it and/or is there another headlamp to also consider? I looked at the JW Speaker headlamps but the cost was double and outside my range. (The 27270C are $325/pair shipped as the best price I have found...)

Any advice before tossing down the chunk of change?

Chris,

Please watch the "Headlight Revolution" reviews first on Youtube. This will give you objective reviews of every LED headlamp currently on the market, and lots of information on OEMs, manufacturers, beam patterns.

I switched to Truck Lite LED headlights about a year ago. They are great!

Same here. I have them on both mine and love them. They pair great with Rigid LED off-road lights

Very pleased with my switch to Truck Lite. Significant difference over halogen.

Someone just posted a photo of some LED headlights that look just like the originals in the 'What have you done to your Defender' thread. I'd check that out.

I have the truck-lites. They're okay, but I'm not as impressed as I'd hoped to be.

You can find deals on the JW Speaker lights. I got a set of the upgraded Evo J's for my wife's JK for $499 from 4 Wheel Parts and put her old Evo 2's on the 110. The difference between the Halogens and the LED'd are (excuse the pun) night and day.

On a side note, I had a Biker compliment my "Harley Lights" the other day. Apparently HD is using JW Speaker's on some of their production bikes now.

The pics of the Truck-Lite 27270c's seem to show a grey-tinted lens rather than the traditional clear lens with a mirror background. Do they have the tinted appearance in person?

I put them in my Series truck and it was worth it just from an amperage draw standpoint. Also my aging eyes are having problems driving at night and these have made a very positive impact in that arena as well.

That video review that Ed/sonoronos posted above was interesting....not very favorable for the truck-lites. Some of the others fared better.

I've been waiting for a LED that retains the esthetics of the classic light.
I dont like the *jeep* look that most LEDs seem to scream out...

Hey Chris - This was one of the first upgrades I did to my D90 and it was absolutely worth every penny. The next thing to consider is upgrading your dash lights and dome light to LEDs and wire up a roller switch to an LED strip in our cubby box Next thing I'm going to do is wire up some footwell and tub LEDs connected to the light switch for the front doors.

One of my friends got a pair of the Truck-Lite LEDs and they were okay at first, but after a couple months they got super dim. When you were in the truck you couldn't even tell they were on. So he replaced them with H4s in Cibie housings. He rewired them so he could run 100w bulbs too. Lightyears better. You can find them on Amazon.

I too watched all those reviews posted above. Very informative on a cold morning. I was disappointed to see they did not measure lumens produced but went with the Mfr numbers. When he was talking about depth and cooling fins I was wondering about the fitment and cooling of being in a LR Series headlamp bucket. Anyone have any experience with this? Are Defenders the same?

I put a couple of KC cyclone lites on for backup/work lights they are (mfr) rated at 1100 lumens and come with a 24 year warranty. Very bright, easily mountable, durable(I hope).

I think the videos measure the lux (not the same as lumens) output at both low and hi beam output.

The trucklites were 550 lux low, 1927 lux hi @ 25 feet. The beam pattern was broad / flat and very little hotspot. high beam is very focused.

The peterson mfg/kc hilites were 699 lux low, 1099 lux hi @ 25 feet. The beam pattern on low and high are much more focused on the center of the beam than the trucklites.

The jw speaker evo 2 were 662 lux low, 1123 hi @ 25 feet. The beam pattern was the widest and broadest of all the headlights.

Not sure about how well some of these fit, but I've seen folks on here install all three of the above and probably others in the Defender bowls, so it's possible.

The Putco 12015 were 128 lux on low and 262 on high with a claimed 3,000 raw lumen

Nolden GL160 429 and 981 lux lo/hi and 1,550/1700 lumen

Oracale 7554-504 158/1330 and 1,800/3,800

Vision X Vortex XIL-7RD 654/693 and both could be selected on/off or combined for 2,947 Lumen

United Pacific 313550 549/1,185 with 2,100 lumen

United Pacific/Maxxima MHL-07HiLo/Anzo 881035/Grote 90941-5/Quadratech 97109.011
were 504/1397 lux and 500/2,400 lumen

The highest Amp draw of the tests was high beam 3.25A and lowest .7A

What was best about this review is the on road beam pattern test. I just wished it was all on 1 video.
