Tropical Roof on Defenders

I wanted to open this thread up to everyone and gather thoughts. I always liked the concept of the tropical roof on the old series line, and wondered why they did away with them for the introduction of the defender. Didn't think about it until I read through the land rover ad threads, where D110XD showed the link to the malaysian owners club ad that won an award at the Cannes festival.

http://www.canneslions.com/winners_...n_2_2_04760.htm

It appears to have a fabricated diamond plate second skin, and then I started thinking that it would probably be easy to have one fabricated, and the parts for the vents that go through the 109 roof are easily sourced, and could probably be easily added to the defender roof. Has anyone done anything like this? How is the 109 second skin attached to roof ribs on the 109?

Looks like a roof platform. I would guess doubles as a roof rack. Nice clean idea. (and cheaper). What one would need is to source the roof ribs?? to attach the platform to?

Old 110 roofs have ribs still, like the red 84.

The ribs were on the outside on the early 90's and 110's
The tropical roof skin is an idea that's been brewing on the back burner with me too

I would be very interested to learn more about that. Neven seen or heard this.

The only car I ever saw coming close to that is the one on this picture. However this was specially ordered by the first owner and dealer fitted, ordering the parts from a new 109 roof. It doesn't have the roof vents though.

What would the point be without the vents?

There is still space between the tropical top and the actual roof so when in motion the radiant heat is carried out the back.

Mine has one installed as well, complete with roofvents. This is an original Dutch vehicle from 1983.

The tropical sun sheet will reflect a lot of heat, but work much better with the vents developing a siphon effect.

While sitting the tropical roof skin reflects the heat.
While driving air travels under and over the roof skin cooling it and the main roof.
The air underneath the roof skin forms a siphon effect when the vents are open developing an air flow from the windows and bulkhead vents that damn near eliminates the need for AC.

Mike, that is a beauty. I was considering trying to install a 109" sun shade on my 110 when I got it. I think it would be a good alternative to A/C out here in the dry west.

I did not know you could get one from the factory on early 90s/110s. Very cool.
