Travel to OBX Questions

Planning a summer trip the OBX. Need to arrange flights for a portion of the trip. My road trip plan is to ferry from Cedar Island to Ocracoke and then drive up the coast to Kitty Hawk. My road trip is going to continue through VA and NC before returning west.

What is the best way to book flights for a point to point trip?

Ideally I don't want to back track to get to airports for pick up and drop off and we have a short window of travel time. I'd like to time the flight arrival with the same day as getting on the ferry. My current plan has us in Morehead City the day before we depart but that can be adjusted. I was thinking a departure out of Norfolk VA on the return.

Thanks,
Alex

You can fly direct from Denver to Raleigh using Southwest. You can either rent a car in Raleigh and its 2.5 hours to more head or fly to Kinston. I would just head out of Raleigh. I don't think you would save any time.

I'm not sure if the hb2 bill will affect your flight. Seattles airport is one the ones protesting NC so flights doubled from Raleigh to Seattle. Which is why I'm not heading out that way this summer.

I've driven this route many times. Easy drive. Make sure you get your ferry reservations

x2 on what Brian said, you can also consider New Bern, I've flown in there a few times and it's central like Kinston.

Thanks. I'll look into these. The kids and I will be driving east from Denver so the less time I spend picking up our flying passenger the easier it will be for me.

How far in advance do you think I need to book ferry reservations? I already did our campgrounds since it is the 4th of July week.

Unsure about cedar island. The ocracoke to hatteras is usually a every 50 min.

Are you staying in Morehead anywhere? I'll be down there staying in Atlantic beach for the 4th

Make sure you stop by the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum right by the ferry in Hatteras. They have a real-life enigma machine.

Uh, yup. This one was pulled up from a U-boat off the coast of NC by a couple of grave-robbing rednecks. And it caused an international incident w/Germany.

Any recommendations for RV camping between Morehead and Cedar Island? Not looking like we will make the last ferry from Cedar Island on the 30th. Our passenger lands at 1 on the 30th. Driving has been going slower with kids and the opressive heat.

Alex,
There isn't much between Morehead and the Cedar Island Ferry.
There is a place on Harkers Island called Cape Lookout RV park
Address: 1491 Island Rd, Harkers Island, NC 28531

Thanks Doug. I'll check that one out. Just trying to get a back up plan in case we don't make it.

Alex, not sure which way you are inbound, but if taking Hwy74, you are welcome to stay at our place tonight. We are away in Fl, but I can get you a key...
I'm guessing you are inbound on I-40, but if coming through Clt, we are about 30 miles east.

You can try Salter Path Campgrounds in between Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach and Water's Edge on NC 24 as well. They are probably out of your way since you are working on getting to Cedar Island.

Stop at El's Drive-In in Morehead if your hungry.

I'm headin down to AB on Sat for the week. Looking forward for a little boat time.

Did an RV park in Morehead City and then ferried out the next day. Thanks for the offer Dale, greatly appreciated.

We had a blast on the OBX. Kids loved the warm water. Headed west now, should be back in CO the end of the week. It's been a fun trip.
