ToyoMT 255/85/16

Finally got ahold of some Toyo MT's in the new 255/85/16 size. They measure 33" tall mounted on a Wolf rim and have a nice thin profile. I've read of them balancing with very little weight but given my experience in the past with Rover steel rims I wasn't surprised to see a few balance weights. This is a big heavy tire and heavy rim.

Mounted I have experienced some very minimal rubbing on my Rovertym castor correcting arms at full lock with an ARB 3 inch lift (Rovertym arms add some width over stock). Haven't adjusted the steering stops yet - not sure if it's necessary.

On the road I've been really happy with them. I haven't had a chance to get them dirty but have driven a few 100 km's of wet and dry tarmac with some washboard road and have been impressed with grip. They are stiff but I've found they've taken a lot of the wallow out of my roof rack/tent adorned 110 TDI.

I hope to get some fall trips in after solving some driveline vibes. More to come....

Henry

Looks good.

over here in the UK, 255/85 is a very popular size. although the only readily available tyre in that size is the BFG MT (not a bad thing though)

I ran with these on my last two 90's, and have them on alloys on my current 110. excellent tyre, just the "right" size without being as skinny as a 7.50, but not as wide (and hence splashing shite up the side of the truck) as a full width 33 or 35.

I've got Toyo MTs on my FJ and couldn't be happier on and offroad they are great.

When I need to get new meats on the D90, It will probably be those in 285 size

Enjoy them!

How wide do they actually measure? I know a 255/85 should be ~10.5" wide but sometimes the run wide or narrow... They look great, I'm thinking about getting a set.

I just bought a set of 255-85/16 BFG MT's for my 90. If I had know about these I would have given them some serious thought. They look great in the photos and look a little wider than the BFG's which is a good thing IMO. Like Will said, I would be interested in the width of those Toyo's mounted and at a on-road air pressure.

I do like the BFG's so far and I'm glad I went with the 255's size. They fit within the wheelwells nicely and keep the mud from getting all over the side. The 255's seem to turn even easier than the stock 265's - althought they did drop the acceleration down due to the height and weight.

Thanks for the writeup Henry. I'll look forward to hearing how they do in the dirt.

I had a chance to run a tape measure over the top of the Toyos this evening. I got 10.5 inches mounted on Wolf Rims. Another plus to this tire is Toyo actually endorses there use on 6.5 inch rims.

Thanks for the comments...
