then of course there was the "no brakes" bit... and the fact that by the end everyone including the producers apparently agreed that the thing was a death trap that they had to kill off before it murdered Hammond...

Obviously even an old LR 88 would have been a better option

I just loved how the RRC was the king the entire episode

Found this stat on google one day... I don't know how many of you know this but, before Camel trophy and all that great stuff.... the Range Rover was the first vehicle to completly cross the Darien straight and I don't think till today, no other vehicle has done this.
This was 4 years after its debut in 1974, the Darien straight btw is 80 miles of swap... between Central and South America.... I think! Anyway its the only break in the hwy that connects N.A to S.A.

Have 2 of them, and was thinking about replacing the wife's 93 lwb.... but knowing its history and heritage it would be very hard to let go.... especially with all the $$$ in parts I've put into it.

BTW, you guys have to try to find the episode where they drive through Alabama with old beaters and spray painted on the side's of them thinks like NASCAR SUCKS and other bais Southern things.... you will laugh your ass off!

The Darien Gap was crossed by the Rangie but what isn't mentioned too often is that a Series 2A was brought in as a pathfinder. They also did a lot of water crossings I guess which is up to whoever if they did it completely or not.

A group of CJ-5s crossed it all by land which set the Guinness Record. Took them 741 days to travel 125 miles! over 2 years for 125 miles!? I would shoot myself after the 2nd week.

Yes, the Series IIa 88" land rover had been rolled and bought on the cheap. The story goes the range rovers constantly broke axles (heavy and overloaded and with near tractor tread type tires) and suffered other maladies whereas the bone stock SIIa just chugged along fine.

I really want to read the book about the trip, but it is silly money used.

Got $100 to spare for the book? I found one and really want to read it too.

Daniel- start a thread, pass the book on after reading it, and each person sends you $20 when they get it. Not so much for the $$, but to track it and see how long it circulates, just a thought...

Awesome episode of Top Gear! That classic didn't look too far off from mine - at least before they lifted it.

Thank you for correcting that Daniel..... its the Darien Gap and not a straight like I called it!
So, as far as the scout vehicles are concerned.... the Series! Would that be compared to lets say... the camera guy that films Bear Grills in the " Man vs. Wild " TV series, because that poor bastard has to follow that Madman around... and he does it holding a camera, HaHa!
Man, when they showed that 2800ft drop down to the ocean..... I got lightheaded in my living room.
Looking foward to tomorrow!

Luis,

What is the title of the book and where might one inquire about a purchase?
