Tool deals thread

Figured we should start a thread on smokin deals on tools. Either ones we stumble across in our travels and want to pass on, or in my case right now, ones we want to brag about finding for ourselves!

Last Saturday morning I stumbled across a garage sale about a mile from my house. Really it was a barn sale, but who cares. Among the usual old person crap (walkers, dehumidifiers and other generally useless stuff) were some vintage hand tools. I exercised good restraint on buying stuff I didn't need until I came across a big ass 5" bench vise. It was on the floor with no price, looked like it was never used. Further inspection revealed that it was never used. Still had wax paper stuck to all the untreated surfaces. I asked the guy running the show what he wanted (thinking he'd be looking for at least $100). When he said $20, I had a twenty dollar bill in his hand within 10 seconds. It's not a Snap-on like the badass one Jimmiejams was selling, but for a non-professional mechanic like myself, I thought it was a smokin deal. What do you think?

Yeah, that was of my thought. We could post deals and maybe offer reviews and advice on what works and what doesn't depending on the application and intended use.
Been building a collection for a while. Was going to drop $2,500 on a used Snap On chest, (either a Classic 96 or similar) but reality set in and I realized that I don't need the BEST, just good quality. Ended up with an older Snap-on rolling cabinet 30" that needed some TLC.

I got a used snap on 3/8 14vlt and 18vlt drill with two chargers and four batteries for $350! I love them!! Looking for a 1/2" impact now

Great story with the SO rolling bottom cabinet I bought. A guy (plumber) took it as payment for some work he had done at an old-timer's house. He was tired of it taking up shop space and posted it on CL. The drawers were full of random tools. Sorting them all out makes me think the PO was a service tech at Chrysler/Dodge dealer in the late 70s/early 80s because one drawer was full of all sorts of jeep, dodge and Chrysler emblems and stickers. Anyway it has obviously sat for many many years.

Among the hundreds of random tools I found what appeared to be old slides (you know those old 2" slides before digital cameras) of what I'm guessing was naked pictures of the dudes wife or GF from the 70s. Guessing it was the 70s because of the lack of landscaping. They were underneath the drawer liner. Crazy stuff!
Oh, I paid $250 for the top/bottom cabinet full of tools. No SO sockets or screwdrivers or anything really juicy, but other things like pneumatic rivet gun and random non-matching wrenches.

That's a good price Ron.
I was seeing 60" SO cabinets (just the bottom) for between $1,800 and $2,800. Lots were basically brand new. I was told that SO has a "buy back" or trade-in program so there's a pretty robust market for good quality pre-owned SO tools.

Anyway, I'd have snatched that deal up for sure, good find. that's what I was looking for. the 60" SO had the perfect drawer setup with long, deep drawers at waist height.
A lot of the older cabinets have shallow drawers on the top two rows (lower cab) and while they're great for screwdrivers, I like my sockets there right at waist height where I'm always grabbing them . Besides, 60" seems just right as far as holding the right amount of tools.

I keep two SO top cabinets stationary on a work bench holding seldom-used tools. the tools that get all the use stay in the roller bottom where I can bring it close to the action.

If I had the headroom in my garage, I'd have a 2-post lift before any of this though.

If you're ever up Maine ways check out liberty tool. I've bought great 1/2 ratchet accessories there for a song. It's kinda a junk shop but a lot of it comes from people bringing ALL there grandfather or fathers tools and they go through and price them.

It's like antiquing for men

Millermatic 35 - $400
I look through CL occassionally for a MIG welder. Specifically for a Hobart Handler 190 or some of the Miller models 180+.

I'm a little apprehensive about spending more than a few hunded on a used welder because I have no idea if it was used beyond its capabilities and/or there's a bad circuit board etc. There's really no way to know unless you run it for a few hours.

I came across this Millermatic 35. It's older and too industrial for my needs (both space and power demands), but figured I'd share it in case anyone in CT was looking:
http://newlondon.craigslist.org/tls/4499990788.html
Seems like a lot of welder for $400, especially if it comes with a 200' extension cord (that must be one burly extension cord if it's properly gauged, given that run)

I'll probably end up getting a new HH 190 from Northern Tool for $800 with an aluminum spool gun, but until my tool/toy budget coffers get replenished, I keep checking CL for any really good deals.

"Growler"!

I could try to post them, but I'm trying to keep this thread alive and not in The Pit. They're slides, so they may as well be early caveman drawings insofar as what good are they.
Besides, there can be only one Neil.

.....and furthermore, and trust me on this, there are some images you just can't "unsee" and you'd be better off not seeing these. Amateur was REALLY amateur back then.

Here are my recent Craigslist purchases. Not sure if they are deals per se. For central NJ they probably are.

Craftsman 5163 Vice - research says it was made in the 30's or 40's and cost $14 new: http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/images...tsmanVises.png
http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Craftsman_Vise
My prior vise was a big box bought Wilton. It worked well until I tried to use it as a bearing press on a late night frustration fix. I am going to build a stand for it so I can slide it outside.

Also got a Rick Mears Snap-On setup.
KR-537D Top 1984
KR-547D Middle 1991
KR-557E Bottom 1984

I really just wanted a secondary tool chest for some more storage but with all things I do, I bit off more than I should have. Going to sears for a decent roller bearing setup to match what I already had, I would have been done. As it is I am going to pull the trays on this one and clean it up. On the plus side the Snap-On tool boxes seem to work well, and hold value.

I got all three pieces for $500 and an electric shears up to 14G for $30.

I picked up a nice 3/8 snap on ratchet from PTSchram that was a trade in for a steal.
