TLC Icon

Anybody else seen this yet?

I'm impressed. When is somebody going to make a dedicated site like this for the Defender? I guess Copley and ECR are already doing it, and you don't really need to update a Defender now do you?

At least ECR and Copley dont re-badge the Defender as something silly like the "Hero" and claim its a limited-production vehicle. Kinda wierd. I wonder if that badge is a casting or a real galvanized lizard.

Doesn't it seem ridiculous to people to spend $89k on a truck like this? Yea its updated and probably an interesting piece of equipment and surely capable but thats like 3 really good condition fj40s or better yet 3 D90s- wagon, softtop, and a 110.

No. People don't want to have the same car as everyone else...otherwise this would be ford-taurus.com

Not trying to belittle the idea of people starving, or the fact that an FJ40 for $89K is rediculous, but I feel like I do enough for the people starving issue (won't go into it) and I think the people buying this truck are probably the type of people that donate to food banks (if anything for the tax break).
The thing I like is that they say on the website that they're building it for off-road use. I mean, it's no early RR on the inside, but it does look like it'd do alright on the trails. This, of course, gets back to the "no one pays $89K for a truck to tear up off road" debate...

What I don't understand is how they can sell these things as new cars - but we can't get the CKD 110's. I'm willing to bet the Icon doesn't have airbags.

NM - after some reading it looks like they might start with an older vehicle

It's interesting, but I'm not impressed. I once owned a 78 FJ40 and it was a great truck. All the cool stuff I liked about the Land Cruiser is missing from the Icon (hard top w/white roof, inward facing rear seats, ambulance rear doors, turn signals on the fenders). If I wanted another FJ40 I'd buy one of these for half that price. http://www.coolcruisers.com/

Yes, People are starving, but you still drive a ten year old truck that you most likely spent over 20k for. Rich people are different. When you and your friends can afford anything, you will pay any amount for something nobody else has. My old man used to hand build custom brass light fixtures. People would come in to his shop and tell him they wanted something that set them apart from their friends. I am just a mid level corporate whore, but I spent a lot on a quality D-90 instead of taking the easy route and getting a Rubicon. Oh, and I really dont care about the people starving.

Matt...

I think it's cool. I like the more modern look with the old school simplicity. They are filling a small market niche that modern trucks can't and I applaud their creativity. It seems like a similar concept to the guys that take old Mustangs and rebuild them in large quantities and turn them into 'Eleanor' replicas. If a product strikes the right chord with people, they will stand in line to buy, no matter that the cost is. Think about Starbucks...they've built a billion dollar business selling us $4 cups of coffee. I'd love to do something along the same vein with Land Rovers...just wait until 2009 when the first generation trucks start hitting 25 years old!

I think it's cool. The price is ridiculous but the truck is cool. It looks very well made and lots of thought went into it. As to the name change thing? I dont think it's too differant than say what the Ibex trucks are. Take a Defender rework it put a differant name on it but it's still a Rover.
