Thoughts on this 1986 90

A friend who is looking at d90's sent me this craigslist ad. I'm no expert so I thought I'd ask you guys then relay the info over to make me look smart. I apologize if this truck has already been posted

My first thoughts are that the n/a 2.5 engine might be a dog, the rust in the passenger footwell could mean there is more hiding elsewhere, and I'm curious as to why there are no headlight surrounds.

Thanks

Here's the C-list ad
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...458187002.html

ENGINE : 2495cc 12J 4 cylinder normally aspirated diesel 65.5bhp At
4000 RPM. 113lbft of torque at 1800 RPM. 5 speed. All hoses are new as can be seen in the pictures. Vehicle has a top
speed of 80MPH but vehicle much prefers the 62MPH mark. This D90's routine maintenance was done in accordance with military standards and the engine shows the efforts. Super clean.

TRANSMISSION : LT77 5 speed manual. Permanent 4WD with manual diff
lock and high/low ratio. Remote breathers fitted to axles, transfer box
and gearbox.

BRAKES : Fully overhauled system. Standard dual circuit, servo
assisted. Discs up front with drums on rear.

TIRES : Excellent military 7.50 R16's XZL's all round.

STEERING : Original LHD manual box. Light and precise.

BODYWORK : Bare metal respray, finished in deep bronze green.

Here are some questions people have asked to provide as much info as possible:

-Does the truck have any issues mechanically electrically or otherwise that need to be addressed at the moment?
+ No mechanical/electrical issues or concerns. The truck runs great, starts every time no problem. It has never been anything less than dependable.
-How many miles are on the engine?
+ 103,013 miles
-Are there any current problems with the engine?
+ None whatsoever
- Is there any rust in the engine bay?
+ No rust that I can see in the engine bay
-Is there any rust anywhere else on the vehicle? (ie undercarriage, under doors, floor panels)
-If so, surface or rot?
+On the driver side door there is a one inch hole of rust that is contained to that area. The passenger side floorboard has been replaced according to military specifications and there is surface rust there. Other than that the body is in great shape.
-Has there been any rust problems addressed on the truck before?
+ See above
-How is the transmission working?
+ Transmission works as it should with smooth transition into all 5 gears
-Any leaks on the transmission or engine?
+ Engine was overhauled by ABRO for the military and the plate stating that is on the engine block showing ring and bearing sizes. The gentleman I purchased it from replaced all the seals and gaskets prior to the sale.
- How is the clutch?
+ Does not slip or have any issues with it.
- When was the last time brakes were serviced?
+ When I purchased it the gentleman before me redid the brakes, a little over a year ago. But I do not drive it all that much. Since I've owned it I only put 2,000 miles on it.

Ask anything else you can think of and I'll do my best to answer.

Amarveer - I believe the current owner is on here and posted up a week or two asking about market price. Same spec as Baldewin's truck IIRC. Der Schildkröte, slow and steady.. Oh yeah, no headlight surrounds is because it's an ex-MOD truck.. military doesnt need fancy trim

Looks reasonable. Its Ex UK Military so it would never have had headlight surrounds from new. Someone has added what appear to be Series 3 headlight finishers just make the headlight recesses neat. The 2.5n/a should be ok if its been rebuilt, but you can never tell unless you try. Its only 67hp though so dont expect anything wonderous. Rust-wise the frame may be fresh as a daisy, or likewise it may be rusted and covered in black underseal to hide it, you cant tell until you get under and start to tap about with a hammer listening for the hollow thud of rust instead of the ring of metal. Ignore what the add says about manual steering being light and precise, it never was, and never will be, but you get used to it.

I think this was a D90 from Canada that has been on Ebay multiple times. MOD vehicles don't have the surrounds. Most of these are trouble free, the 2.5 is no issue, very easy to work on, it all depends on what he wants to sell it for, if I remember correctly his reserve was like 12K plus. For that you can get a refurbed LHD Tithonus 110 from Witham's. I just really depends on what he wants and what he is looking for. I would have no problem buying this. The chassis looks good, rear cross member looks good, and if it is the vehicle from Canada, I have another 10-15 pictures of it. Engine compartment is spot on, seats could be replaced, and I would with Wolf ones, the lower door frames are notorious for rusting, they are not aluminum like the tops. But overeall if he wants a MOD LHD 90, this is not bad, he can always have a 200 TDI sent over with ancillaries and bolt that in with the current LT77 tranny. With it being in the USA already, LHD and former MOD, I think the price is fair.

That is a different 90, the one on craigslist is deep bronze green and does not have any diamond plate, I think this is the one out of Canada, that sold on Ebay 6 months or so ago.

The one with diamond plate I haven't seen before.

Michael110, by the way nice Tithonus, are you enjoying it? I was contemplating buying one from Witham, this is where my 90 came from, was looking at doing a LHD to augment my RHD, but decided on a regular RHD 110, that I just bought from someone else, has a recon 2.5 with less than 10k miles on it, new wolf wheels, front axle, brakes, shocks and steering components. Will do a 200 tdi swap in that one and freshen it up. Or I just might do a 300tdi, with R380 and have a spare tranny and engine for my 90.

Thanks for the tip on the headlight surrounds.

Jake, I think it is the same truck. I'm going to pass that thread and this info on. Thanks guys, I'll let you know what happens. 12k seems to be reasonable if everything looks in order in person. I told him to just get a PPI if he's serious.

Amarveer, after looking at the pics between the CL ad and the ones the guy posted i'm not so sure it's the same truck. Just odd that there were two 86 ex MOD defenders for sale by someone in Venice recently. Looking at the details others have posted it does appear they are different trucks.

Abeer, That is not the same truck!, look very closely, the one in Big Sur has diamond plate and different radiator screen, no indicators or reflectors on the off side/near side.

The one on craigslist is bronze green has the newer radiator grill with LandRover Oval, near side and offside indicators and reflectors..

I am almost 100% positive this is the one from Canada, he said he has around 12k into it, that was the reserve of the auction and I talked with the previous seller in Canada, and have multiple pictures of it in Canada, and it is spot on.

Pics from Canada.

80 mph top speed ? Is that when you push it out the back door of a C130 ?
