Thoughts on the MAR

So, tell us what you think? What went well, what could have been better, etc. We will have a similar thread over at ROAV but I will bring the info from this thread to the BOD as well.

Hope you all had a blast

Bring it back to pearls pond. Do rain dances before the event. Get a better caterer. No more guided trails. Bring back night runs. Kind of sad when I did the medium and hard trails in a stock LWB on stock metal springs, stock sized street tires and with the stock air dam still on it and made it out without any damage.

Had fun though.

We had a great time..... I would have moved all the camping to the center so its not so spread out. Night wheeling would be a plus.
I liked how the trail guides had winchers set up at spots so when trucks got stuck, there were out quick and not clogging everything up.. great job.

Showers and bathroom trailer were very nice. I agree with Randy; things were mighty spread out. You had to be very near the rally control area to hear the PA. Trail guides did a great job.

I had a great time but it's hard to critique in some sense because I stayed at a B&B which I don't normally do, and it was dry which it normally isn't. Perfect weather actually.

So if the venue dictates the weather, keep it there

The venue was a large part of why we stayed at a B&B - if RVs were allowed, its likely my brother would have gone and my wife would have probably been ok with camping next to it as a support vehicle (and having the extended family with us).

I think the wheeling was better, despite being more structured. The trails guides are a necessity at Oakridge due to the trails having locked gates, and they did an excellent job. I do sympathize with those wanting to run loose and do things like night runs, but I think abuse of that privilege is what got the venue changed in the first place (but could be wrong).

We opted out on the dinner based on the poor dinner of the summer MAR, but was told we missed out on a nice on there.

I didn't see a bunch of people on the forums that were there which I find disappointing as I'd love to at least put a face to an avatar. It's not really the fault of the event outside of the layout though - we should arrange a d-90.com meet up next time.

Without knowing exactly why you changed venues, I'd suggest giving Gore a try before committing to Oakridge for next year. I think the wheeling would be even better, but perhaps not achieve the goal of moving away from Pearl's pond.

To make Oakridge better, I'd recommend consolidating everything into one area. It was way too spread out. In general I look at the MAR as a social event and the wheeling is secondary. There are plenty of opportunities to get good wheeling in so I don't really care where the MAR is and will keep going regardless.

charles

@jim, it wasn't the same without you.

p.s. Wanted to say good meeting you Randy (one of the few people I met outside of the usual NOVA crew) and add that the RTV trials were an absolute blast. Incredibly well setup.

Yeah Charles.. its good to put a face to the name.

I actually wished for a quick rain storm to kill some of the dust. My truck has about a 1/2 inch of dust inside and I have no idea how the hell to even start cleaning it.. lol

lots of laughts.

We spoke with one of the MAR even coordinators and It was understandable from his point why it was moved to ORA and out of pearls pond.

Next year maybe we can do a D-90 tent or something for members only..... food, drinks, etc.

I agree- things were too spread out. Where we were camped in the infield you couldn't make out the pa system (not unlike the upper meadow @ Pearls Pond). The trail ride schedule should have been included in the registration packet received when you signed in. Registration one place, rally control in the race tower, and the trail ride schedules kept in the big top, could have worked easier.

Loved: the scotch tasting bar, better food vendors and coverage ie all day long, far better meal Friday night, & liked having amenities 5 mins away (abc store, supermarket, autoparts store, diesel pumps etc). It also seemed like the auction/raffle items were beter than in previous years. Even the swap meet area seeemed to do better than in years past. The difficult/hard trails were fun. The evenings were spent socializing and drinking heavily since there were no trail rides. The bathroom trailer and the shower trailer were awesome additions. The total lack of trail jams was also nice (credit to the trail guides for that one).

Pendy- wasn't the same without you there .

Hope you guys Whooped it up at least one night to keep the campers up. Especially if they kept the night runs from you.

Good on you Charles spoiling the Queen in a B&B. At least the heat was not as much an issue either.

Doug glad you made it out with your repower being so close to departure.

Don P just got back from Brazil with some port stories like ours from last summer. Of course mud and rain added to the non starters and port officials nonsense. 8 mini trucks I think- twice the fun-

Any Quentin stories. He get handcuffed or escorted from the premises?

Didn't make it to MAR this year major bummer having to work this past weekend. But I ended up talking to one of the guys that went to the counterMAR? at Gore and he had a blast despite being there one day. Haven't personally been to Gore yet but keep hearing good things about the place so maybe move MAR there next year if only to compare venues?

Pendy- put the wrench down @ 1pm and left @ 2. Ran down with only a down pipe off the turbo. Having intermitent starter issues- seems to be @ the end of its usefull life (got one ?). We drag started it Friday and left it running all day untill the trail rides were over. Got it home , ran new ground straps to frame and block and its definately the starter.

Q was denied participation in the RTV but went and appealed to Mark Letourney who allowed him to compete with a six point handicap. Needless to say his winning streak was broken.

Love to hear Don's import woes. I'll shoot him an email.

You could have subtracted 6 points from my score and it wouldn't have helped.

It was quite fun from my perspective-I was bummed to leave on Sat but even then it was still worth it. I posted a more substantive commentary on pros/cons on ROAV, but most of my thoughts echo those already talked about here-the single biggest downsie (if you want to call it that) was the size of the camping area that made everything so spread out. On the other hand the alley with the vendors/food/etc was awesome.

Yeah I should have mentioned that Dough did a great job of getting his rig running in time, and it runs great.

@Dan, how many rigs went to Gore?

Had about 30 trucks total.
1 Defender (on 36's)
1 Jeep
~3 or 4 Series trucks
Had at least 2 RRS's and 2 LR3's
and the rest were D1, D2, and RRC's

Looking to do something in the Spring. Not sure when, yet. When is the Spring Rally?

Do you have the Valeo?

Sounds like my last trip. Left in the middle of the night a day late and got there a day early after hitting the time zone in CO LOL

Funny story on the Q-as usual
