Thinking about buying a 110 in Dubai

I usually just lurk here because I don't own a Defender, but I check the site often because I'm restoring a '71 Series IIa.

I'm thinking about buying a 90 or 110 and need some opinions. I just relocated to Dubai with my company and came across a 1985 110 for sale for the equivalent of US$4,400. I haven't seen it yet (going to check it out later today) but the owner claims that it recently underwent a full restoration. Based on the photos, I would not consider it a full restoration. But it still seems like a good deal. There aren't as many Defenders here as I expected. Most of the Rovers I see are new Range Rovers, RR Sports and LR3's. It's all about showing off here.

The good thing about an '85 model year is that I can legally import it to the US when I return in a few years. But here's the bad: in an attempt to reduce pollution, the government just implemented a new rule that bans cars older than 20 years from getting registration renewals in Jan 2009. Additionally, 15 year-old cars cannot renew registrations starting Jan 2010. So, I would only be able to drive it on the road for a year (presuming I can get it registered before Jan '09) and then I would have to store it (or use it for off-road only).

The other thing to consider is that I might lose out on being able to find other older (importable) defenders very soon (as they begin to get exported by the owners or sold to the scrap yards) OR conversely, I may see some better deals as owners try to unload them.

anyway here are some details:
"full restoration"
new interior
V8, 5-door
has about 200,000 km (125,000 miles)
new carb. & recent tune-up

Pros:
I can legally import this in a few years when I return to the US
reasonable price
new interior
V8 - gas (petrol) here is only $1.60/gal vs. $4.90/gal for diesel

Cons:
Body has "decorative" pop rivets everywhere
looks like an amateur paint job
needs new tires
Can't register in Dubai next year - will have to sit in the garage (desert/off-road use only)
V8 - would prefer a diesel when I return to the US

What do you guys think? is this a good deal? I'm pretty much aware of what to look for as far as frame and bulkhead issues since I have a IIa. but are there other major issues I should be aware of for an '85 V8 model?

thanks in advance.

Mike

Black in the desert ? Does it have killer a/c-see it has the later style grill bump out for an a/c condenser ? The decorative rivets are lost on me but to each his own. If these early trucks are no longer legal soon I would be interested in any 83/84 lhd 110's or 90's you run across.

Sounds like this one would be fun for a while and cheap to run.
It has the really cool lift up handle/ roll up window doors that were unique to 85 models.

it has AC but it's not currently working. but it's definately a must-have here. My exterior thermometer was reading 116 deg F this morning at 9:00am!!

yeah, I'm not digging the rivets. hopefully it looks better in person.

I'll be on the lookout for other 90's and 110's (my wife even points them out now!!). there aren't many of them though. I plan on taking a look in Oman this week sometime. I noticed about 10-12 old series 109 pickups when I was there last month. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Ditto on the rivets.. What is under the skins? Bullet Proof Kevlar Panels riveted to the skins?

Seems like a steal at $4400 US for a LHD 110 with what I would assume is no rust issues. Can't you register it in the US and drive it in Dubai?
