Thinkin' about an engine swap!

I have been seiously been considering a 300tdi or 2.8 powerstoke for my 97! Anybody here done a swap? I am not sure which engine to get. I have not been able to find any good info on the web yet so some links would be helpful. I am pretty mechanically competent but I have never really worked on diesels so I think I'll have my local rover mechanic swap it out.

But where shall i buy the engine? I am not sure which engine is the right choice the 2.8 seems more logical because it is american thus parts can be obtained locally and i don't necasarrily need a rover mechanic to work on it. The 300tdi, I assume is more expensive but must fit better.

Well I am no expert but the 2.8 is not made locally and the parts are not local either, but between the 2 it is a matter of how much you want to spend. The 2.8 is going to cost 2 to 3 times that of the 300tdi. There are a few good threads about this on the forum.

The 300Tdi will only cost less if you get a used one. The 300Tdi and the 2.8 both come off of the same line in Argentina. A new 300 will cost more to buy and probably less to install, while the 2.8 is a bit cheaper, but requires some custom work.

Do a search, read the stuff, then feel free to call me at 803 790 4156 if you just want to ask questions.

I priced out the two a couple of months ago. I priced the 300tdi with RDS, George's price for a complete kit was $11,000. The 2.8 powerstroke from M&D in the UK was about the same price with shipping and a HD radiator and larger intercoolr as well as a new A/C kit. I went with the 2.8, it is an updated and modified version of the 300tdi.

Let's see some pics of that full size rad, ZF cooler, intercooler and AC condensor!!!

Maybe I'll bend Pendy's ear at the rally.

when my v8 mileage gets to the point where i swap my engine, I plan on going with the 2.8. Everything i've read about it is an improvement over a 300tdi.

Hey David, as per your request, one HD radiator. In the other photo the A/C compressor is in the foreground and the phase 2 intercooler is in the background. Hopefully we can get the larger intercooler to fit with the A/C and won't have to use the smaller one.
It's offical, I sent in my $75, I'll be at the rally too.

I think you'll be disappointed with that model of A/C compressor.

Because its a starter

so it won't make hot days cold? That sucks.
You know I was looking at the picture thinking it looked odd for a compressor. Well, at least I got 3 out of 4 right.

I think if your A/C condensor interferes witht the larger intercooler, you can just get one of the extended nose sections like the TD5's. They stick out a couple inches past the normal position.

If you need assistance getting the 97 AC to work with the diesel, I'll have a full report available soon. I adapted a 97 system for my 300tdi and made all the necessary wiring modifications and stuff. I've modified the hoses using Swagelok fittings and I'm getting it all charged on Monday - so I'll be able to tell you if I did a good job or not after that!

Sounds promising, keep me posted. I have a freind with a few tricks up his sleeve. We're going to try and do it without pushing the front out. I had Andy at AlliSport make me his Phase 2 intercooler with a 45mm core instaed of the 60mm core they normally use, so that hopefully will help fit it. Additionally, I did buy a smaller intercooler just in case, hopefully it will be for sale at the end of the month.
