A friend of mine runs a land rover / range rover specialty repair shop. Based on his experience, they are capable of stopping anywhere, anytime, at any cost.

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.

You should seriously consider bringing these in. They would serve two purposes. The first is obvious - something fun for the kids. The second is subtle - condition the family into believing the Rover illness is acceptable in a healthy lifestyle.
