TechShop

I think I died and went to heaven...

This place is AWESOME.

This is the place I mentioned a few years ago that DARPA is funding.

$175 a month membership at the place local to me. Big bucks unless you are spending all day knocking out some big projects.

175 a month is cheap - imho. wsc memberships cost upwards of $100 a month - and the tools pedro posted can be very useful for prototyping.

If you go every day for a few hours... not bad at all.

The place is to go and make parts you've engineered before hand.

You do not want to trial and error there.

Some machines are rented by the minute. Like the water jet. I was told is $3/minute

The Washington Post wrote an article 2 years ago about the JV between TechShop and DARPA.

It was mentioned that they were coming to NoVA.

I just hope the tormach isn't hourly. The rapids and rigidity are low on that machine. A better choice would a true VMC or even something like a Haas Toolroom Mill. Or even a drilling machine.

Has anyone here bought one of the small laths Harbor Freight offers? They just opened a store near me and I went in there for the first time. Wouldn't mind being able to turn my own metal. Whats the opinion on their tool chests?

Free memberships (or at least really cheap) for veterans! There's one that is just a mile from my house that I still need to visit and join.

That's the one at Crystal City.

Underground garage... shops... food... the whole nine yards.

Tool chests are lightweight junk don't waste your money. Better to look on GovLiquidation or CL for good used ones.

The lathees again I cannot imagine are of any quality worth spending money on. Lathes come up pretty cheap on CL if you look as people clear out after grandpa passes away etc. They are heavy and can often be had for little more than the effort required to move them. Plus a used one will often come with some tooling.

Wow, I didn't see that! I haven't made it down there yet but just signed up online. I am sure there are things there that would help with my electric build, including powder coating and hopefully painting, although it's not clear what some of the costs are (above membership).

I used the one in Raleigh a lot for the blasting and powder coating booth. I paid $80 a month with my student id. Great resource biggest issue I had was that the machines were always down. I bought my own powder gun that way I didn't have to use the pos one. The one here shut down while I was on vacation and all my material and supplies went with it. I was really pissed, but what are you going to do?

Just FYI, if you are a veteran in the NOVA area and you were thinking of signing up, I suggest you do so soon. They have a cap on the number of free 1 year memberships they are giving, and they say they are down to 100 left.
