Tdi in NY?

Anyone on Long Island, NY have a diesel converted 90/110?
Any issues with registration/ etc ?

Have a customer wanting one, but want to check he can drive it after he buys it.

Thanks!

Depends on the year. Call the local DMV office. a year or so ago, it was just some paperwork submitted for title change.

DMV said it would still need to pass exhaust tests (and it obviously would not).

Local DMV gave me 3 different answers on 3 different calls. Looking for real world experience if anyone has some.

Thanks

Is Long Island considered NY Metro?

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/vehsafe.htm#diesel

Cause only in NY Metro do you need a smog for a passenger vehicle.

Thanks for the info.
I'll have to pass it along to the customer... I don't know enough about NY.

According to that link, there are NO emissions for diesel vehicles under 8501 GVWR

Diesel-powered vehicles with a MGW of 8,500 lbs. or less are not subject to an annual emissions inspection. Diesel-powered vehicles registered outside of the NYCMA are also exempt from the annual emissions inspection.

The issue is going to be getting the title to show diesel. I have never done that. The one vehicle I have registered in NY is exempt because it is outside of the NYC area and not OBDII.

I had the exact same problem trying to get reliable info when I was debating converting my TJ to a diesel.

The basics are, you need to have the title changed to say its a diesel. Once thats done, its no longer required for emissions (safety inspection remains the same). The problem is its very difficult to find a DMV rep in Albany who knows that a) you can actually do that and b) how to do it.

A DMV representative (or an inspection station in lieu of a DMV rep, i was told) varifies that it is in fact now diesel powered, then the paperwork is submitted. The problem is, you'd have to trailer it and it cannot be driven on public roads between the conversion and the issuing of the new title (with NY state registration).

It is possible and I have heard of some people in the Jeep world doing it, but its annoying and difficult... Good luck!

I'd just make sure your customer is prepared to let it sit for a while while "paperwork" is filed upstate.

Yes, emissions are done for Nassau and Suffolk counties on non-diesel passenger vehicles along with the yearly safety inspection.

Swapping a title to Diesel was easy I have done it twice in the past. Just told the women at the window I did an engine swap and it is a diesel now and she swapped the title to Diesel.

I changed my title to diesel as well, but I think it being a 1973 made it easy.

This is no issue in NY. Submit the title amendment form based on a refurb/repower. $25.

Only '96 and newer is OBDII.

Changing my title from gas to diesel was just a form, and there was no emissions last time I had it done. Mines an 1985 but I swapped the title in 2009.

wow, at a "normal" DMV location?
I was literally laughed at when I asked for "The form to switch the title to a diesel" in Huntington and Hauppauge locations (on Long Island)
