TDI conversion overseas

Not sure if this is the right area to post this but....

I just recently PCSed to Italy. I came across a 300TDI at a good price. I was unsure if I purchased it and did the conversion over here if it would be legal in the states (i.e. going through Customs). My truck is a NAS 97 D90. Would it be wiser to buy the engine and ship back to the states and do the conversion when stateside? Thanks in advance!

If you took your 97 over there I doubt anyone would be looking to see if it's engine had been replaced when you bring it back! But I am no expert.

As a '97, the biggest issue is being able to pass emissions:

Virginia - Diesel powered vehicles
Motor vehicles exempted from emissions inspections include:
NOTE: Diesel powered vehicles are not exempt from the emissions testing program requirements when they have:
  • A model year newer than 1996, and
  • A Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) less than 8,501 lbs., (if GVWR is not available, empty and gross weights will be used) and
  • A registration that expires in July 2007 or later.
Does anyone know if the model year requirement on the diesel exemption denotes a 15 year span? or is it 1996 permanently?

OBDII testing is the issues with 1996 and newer trucks here in Colorado, 1995 or older is the way to go here.

Since you are in Italy why not find a nice older 90 or 110 while you are there then you have the best of both worlds when you come back

Sorry, didn't think about the emissions/obd2 issues. I like Dave's idea.

In Mass they don't test emissions on AWD vehicles

For the purposes of VA, register it as a truck?
The OBDII thing is the significant point that keeps my 96 5speed from dreams of diesel....so instead I just want a 4.6 and would be happy to pay for the gas.

If Mightymo is coming back to this area, we don't have emissions inspection in rural VA. Only NOVA has emissions inspection.

Even still it is something to consider as most areas test and more and more are being forced to so if he decides to sell in the future it could be a major issue.

Just something to consider

I guess I have to add that my assumption is that the 300tdi diesel won't pass VA diesel emissions testing.

but........there's no way for me to verify that. It could be cleaner burning than an aromatherapy candle...I'm just assuming not.

Thankd for all the info fellas. Sorry for the delay in my thanks, still waiting on the Italians to hook up the WWW in the house! You're right Dave... I need to keep my eyes peeled for an older 110! If only I could talk my wife into believing that a 110 would be a good baby hauling vehicle (she's apparently got baby-brain and wants to make a man cup before we leave).
