Talk about departing from your heritage.

http://www.jeep.com/07compass/

Maxim radio was all over how this piece of shit was going to kill Jeep. It's 2 wheel drive!
They had a bunch of current owners saying they couldn't believe they would put the Jeep name on it blah blah blah.

Normally I would just brush it aside, but I feel bad, another 4x4 company is out to make dollars by departing from the heritage and just slapping the name on something...

Jon Wylde (Maxim's car guy) says an AWD is available, but it's standard with 2 in the front. There were some Wrangler guys a tad upset...

I was just at the winter X games in Aspen, Jeep is a big sponsor and had one of these there on display. Not very impressive looking, I think Jeep is looking to give on away. I would definitely rather drive a Freelander over that thing!

Ran across this a while back but forgot to share it.

Denver, CO -- Chrysler Corporation announced today a deal between Jeep, a wholly owned subsidiary, and one of Ford Motors subsidiaries, Land Rover, that will culminate in a new addition to the Jeep line-up in a landmark joint venture between the two companies.

Details of the joint venture are still being worked out but Jeep will take over production of the ill-received Land Rover Freelander with Jeep-style modifications. Representatives from Jeep Motors said they have been looking for a new model with international appeal but unable to design one of their own, realized that the Freelander would be a perfect fit for their needs.

The Land Rover Freelander was highly anticipated but received only luke-warm reception in the marketplace. No one from Land Rover was available for comment. Strangely, laughing was heard from the other end on all attempted phone calls to enquire further about this joint venture.

Jeep will modify the vehicle to fit with their current design, rename it the Compass. The name derives from the many directions that Jeep is going to obtain parts for this very international vehicle. Land Rover utilizes parts made in many of their international markets. In hopes of entering the international market, Jeep is hoping that utilizing these very same parts will strengthen its presence is these locales.

The Jeep Compass will be available at dealers for demonstrations around mid-summer 2006 and for purchase a month or two later.

Looks like Jeep wants to go after the truely Hard-Core owners of the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4.... you know, the growing 'Soccer 4-Wheeler' market.

-Hans

P.S.

Ok, Jeep now has a Front weel drive, sometimes 4 wheel drive car POS. They finally killed off the 4.0HO and replaced it with a high-winding V-6 with less overall power. The new Wrangler also looks like crap with the slanted grill. That, and while they are making a 2007 Wrangler with turbodiesel, it will only be in Europe.

Boy, it Ford/Land Rover ever wanted to release a true to the heritage cross-branded Bronco/Defender..... NOW is the freakin time to do it!

That is truly my dream....I'd love to see a new Bronco/Defender cross-debut someday. (I drive a Bronco but long for a D-90)
