Social Media, and GoFundMe

As we've watched social media sort of take over, things pop up that are actually beneficial for society - I'm thinking here of GoFundMe, in particular.

I've donated to families who have lost loved ones, people raising money to treat cancer, and other noble causes. I've also given a few bucks to some funny campaigns for beer money and bachelor parties.

Curious if you all have embraced this social outlet as well?

I'm asking here - because if you haven't though of it this is what I'm currently doing:
GoFundMe campaign as an outlet for birthday present contributions. I told all me friends and family not to buy me gifts, but to contribute to a gofundme for the defender build.

I'm not linking to it here, as this is not a shameless plug - but thought you'd get a kick out of the idea.

Gotta give it to these programmers, though - some great ideas...

That's a pretty cool idea. I get gofundme requests for causes I've never heard of, from people I've never met.
I figured most of them were phishing emails and delete them.

Benefits - you can plaster it all over social media to motivate people to contribute. If it's a genuinely worthy cause (sick baby, funeral costs, emergency surgery) or if its wildly funny - then it tends to go semi-viral and it's absolutely ASTONISHING how much money can be raised over night.

A kid near us restored a Bronco, but apparently didn't restore the headlights, and drove it off a small cliff in the hill country here and unfortunately, his passenger was fataly wounded in the crash. They raised enough money literally overnight to cover all death related expenses for the family. Truly incredible...

Turns out, I'm not the first - here's a "Landie repair" go fund me from across the pond, HA!

I really despise GoFundMe, aka GimmeMoney. The problem is all the deadbeats in the world have exploited the page and ruined it for people actually in need.

Here's one that really chaps my ass and is Rover related: https://www.gofundme.com/2xuy3mr8
Basically a couple of women want to compete in the women's only Rebelle Rally. They need help raising money for the $10,000 entry fee. That's it. No sob story. No sickness or physical ailment to overcome. No tragic loss or dying wish. Just a couple of women that have the BALLS to set up a GoFundMe page and ask for others to pay for their vacation. WTF!?
Its basically street corner begging taken to the internet.
There's lots of things I WANT to do and places I WANT to go. I guess the joke's on me because I believe in paying my own way.

I don't have a problem with it, so long as the authors are transparent about where the funds go. At that point, the impetus is on the prospective donor to donate or pass. I believe there's a distinction also to be made when they are either indiscriminately asking the general public for money, versus establishing an avenue for friends and family to help further their ambition. Paint me biased, I suppose.

I just don't understand how some people were raised. I would NEVER EVER ask someone, friend, relative, or stranger, to pay for my vacation. People are dying, children are starving, and Vets are killing themselves and still somehow people find it perfectly acceptable to ask and donate to ridiculous things like vacation funds.
Here's a crazy idea. If you don't have the money to register for the event this year maybe shouldn't go? Save up your money, get a second job. You know, actually WORK for what you want in life. Before you ask me to sacrifice something to give you money, tell me what sacrifices you have made.

Well said. What is the deal with all the tip jars these days for non-service purchases? Or the Square registers where it flips around with a default 15-20% tip 'recommendation'? I am all for tipping waiters 20% min, but not to the kid behind the register whose only job is to hand me my $50 takeout order.

He spent most of that money on drugs, alcohol and whores and wasted the rest on tools and gas.

^^^This is exactly why I donated! I knew it would go to a worthy cause.
