"So you want to buy a Defender..." thread

Did anybody ever put together a buyers' guide thread? Three friends have come to me this month asking for buying advice and I want to point them at a thread that will educate them on the basics.

Great idea. Perhaps we can create one as a sticky on the forum?

Is there a way to do a wiki-style format so people don't have to read a hundred posts and consolidate information themselves?

Apparently there already is a D-90 wiki somewhere...I remember writing something for it a few years ago.

Here's my idea for a rough outline:

Code:
I. Do you really want a Defender? (How not to be the person who sells their truck in six months)
  1. Benefits/Strengths/Limitations/Weaknesses of Defenders
    a. Reliability (or lack thereof)
    b. Parts availability (make note of anything that's particularly hard to obtain, e.g. NAS ST cage)
    c. Drivability / suitability as a daily driver
    d. Kids and Defenders - What you'll need to safely transport your family.

II. Defender Taxonomy
  1. Model years
  2. Body styles
  3. Chassis lengths
  4. Factory-supplied motor/gearbox types by model year

III. Finding a good truck
  1. How to do a mechanical + structural evaluation
  2. How to find a good importer or reseller
      a. Things to look for in a good importer/reseller
b Warning signs of a bad importer/reseller - how to avoid getting screwed (incl. common scams)

IV. Buying a truck Stateside vs importing
  1. Overview of importing regulations - what's importable, what's not
  2. Links to relevant regulatory agency websites
  3. State-specific gotchas

I would add sections like...

"Common lies told by sellers and believed by buyers"
"Common areas with rust that you must check"
"Good reasons to not buy a truck"

We have a suggested sellers sticky that buyers can use as well. I believe Jason has been putting together a buyer's guide for the past year, so maybe he'll chime in as well.

The best advice is to consult an existing owner who's past the honeymoon stage with their truck. There's a reason home buyers hire a third party to inspect.

We've had a basic walkthrough on our website for the last few years (info site not the shopping site)

Mostly a high level introduction and warning about ownership challenges

Covering basic configuration and terminology
The "bones" - chassis, engine, driveline
Interior layout
Exterior options
WARNING - Defender ownership isn't for everyone
Buying/building budgeting

Brian beat me to it. His site has a great review.

I like the idea- make it a sticky, put all the info in one place.

You totally forgot to include a section where you describe what you feel their economical standing should be.

1: do I really need wrenches that big?
2: do I really need credit card limits that high?
3: do I really need to drink warm beer?
4: do I really...
