JR Cigars I think. My friend's dad owns the company and had a bunch of those built after they were rescued from Mount Kilimanjaro by a fleet of D110 rescue vehicles. He also bought a few right after the trip...I'm still waiting on pictures of those from him!

They were free with a box of montecristos. We (CvC maybe--anyway, someone on the board) figured out you could buy a 5 pack and get the free truck so we all did it the same day and then they got wise and changed it around so you could not do what we were doing. Now they charge $40 for them. They are cool, but have a couple of odd things (like they are LHD, but the brake booster is on the wrong side etc.). I play with mine all the time (I did not take it out of the box for over a year, then I got drunk with some girl and she convinced me to take it out of the box--I won't say what she offered in return).

Haha, nice. I found the old article in lrlmag, but there was one in Cigar Aficionado in 2005 or so that I couldn't find. Right after the trip he bought a NAS 1993 110 (which they outfitted with a bunch of safari decals) and another 110 for his son that I do not believe was NAS by any means, as I I believe it had been built by some dude in Utah if I recall. The NAS 110 was then auctioned off to charity after he owned it for a few years, and some semi-pro golfer won it. I've been trying to get Mr. Rothman to send me some of the pics of them but he hasn't found any yet. :-(

http://lrlmag.com/aug08/discoveries

"MONTECRISTO LIMITED EDITION DEFENDER 110

In 2003, Lew Rothman, owner of the largest cigar distribution company in the world, JR Cigars, accompanied his son, son-in-law, and brother-in-law to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. After camping at 12,600 feet on day two, things were going well. By the fourth morning, at 15,000 feet, one of the climbers was very sick. The group decided to start down immediately, taking a rarely used trail that crossed two valleys, murderous switchbacks and boulders before reaching the rainforest. With five or six hours to go and nightfall approaching, the team was exhausted and in the middle of a rainforest full of dangerous, hungry animals. Reaching the end of their endurance, suddenly they heard a “growling noise,” and “a big, mud covered, white thing snarled its way up the trail: it was this 1993 Land Rover Defender 110.” According to Lew, “If not for the Land Rover, who knows if I would be alive to tell this tale. I am convinced that there’s not another vehicle in the world that could have battled its way that far up Kilimanjaro.” His extraordinary experience inspired the creation of 2,000 model Defenders, exclusive to JRCigars.com. Available for $39.95 each."

That's cool, thanks for sharing. I never knew the history behind the model. I got two of them on the five cigar pack deals back when 'this story broke on D-90 Source'. I wish I could find a model of a Defender 90 that is as nice as well...

I think a forum member bought the "real' truck that it was modelled after. I bought a couple of the models from JR also. very cool, especially with the story on the back of the box about the rescue etc.

Yeah, 1:18 scale. Just found mine finally; still new in box also.

After looking up the manufacturer on the back of this one, I decided to look up the company: Universal Hobbies (HK) Ltd. Here's what came up for Ddefenders. Pretty sweet I think!

On the back of the box is the picture of the actual one they bought when they got back from the trip.

I just got my JR one in the mail. It's pretty cool. but SOOOO many discrepancies! It says TD5 on the body, but the box says 3.9L, not to mention all the other left hand drive right hand brake booster issues.

I got in on that deal.. but I think I bought 3. Donated one of the trucks to one of the SCARR raffles. One is still boxed up and the last was on the Rover toy shelf.

You're not the real deal unless the alligator is painted on the side of your truck!
