Should it cost $1000 to replace my intake manifold gasket?

Had to take the LWB into the dealer so that I could pass inspection (anti lock light) They told me the intake manifold was leaking and it would be $1000. I assume thats all labor but does it really take 10 hrs to do?

Not really. I think book time is 4-5ish hours. Figure $150 for parts (although I bet they are charging for new style bolts all arounds so an additional $150 or so for new bolts).

I can do one in about 3 hours.

Being new to the area, I would imagine you're not accustomed to working with this shop. If that is all he is doing, it sounds like too much labor. There are a number of other things he might be doing while taking off the intake manifold.

My mechanic is good in that he often advises doing work systemically, avoiding a return trip to service parts in the same area. For instance, it might be a good time to change valve cover gaskets and heater hoses/pipes if they are questionable. Ask if this guy has more in mind.

Yeah i felt like i was getting screwed which is why i asked and yes being new to the area and not having the same mechanics i have had for years makes me feel vulnerable to getting ripped off but then again thats what dealers are for!

DIY

Not a hard job to do and takes few tools (a good allen head socket is all I can think of special).

Is this LR of scarborough? Not that I really have a lot of experience with them but they are a classic stealership. In that area they have the clientele to charge outrageous prices.
