Scotland/UK split

I don't know if many of you are following this but looks like Scotland could vote yes to break away from the UK tomorrow.

UK would probably have a new flag and the currency might drop a lot.

Lower pound = good time to buy.
Pound has been quite strong vs the dollar lately.
Most Scots would embrace economic uncertainty to free themselves of the 300yrs of tyranny.

Most Americans have little knowledge of US or world history beyond their own lifetimes. Sadly few place any value on history or historic items and landmarks anymore.

Scotland on the other hand is acutely tied to its history, both on the clan level and nationally.
Tomorrows vote will be interesting.

With my wife being a Scottish with her family still there and having just spent 2 weeks in the Highlands it is going to be interesting. It was very odd to see the country side covered in NO signs and in the city only yes signs.

All the data I'm seeing indicates people are not being truthful with pollsters and a no vote will win by as much as ten percent.
It's a bit like the Quebec separatists a few years ago.

For the scots this is truly a fork in the road. And that fork is one way only. The English would never accept them back in the union.

There is a lot riding on the oil and gas reserves estimates.

If they do choose to seperate I wish them the best of luck. Having a prosperous neighbor to the north can only be a good thing for both countries.

My view is that they should use this as leverage to get further powers ... Get to grips with management but with the UK and EU as insurance and revisit this in 10 years.

But I'm not voting and if the rest of the UK got to vote on the same question I can pretty much guarantee that Scotland would be a seperate country on Friday ... And that is probably driving their desire to go it alone.

Whatever happens it will be very close and 49% of the population aren't going to be happy.

"Your majesty, it is obvious that I will win the referendum. I want Scotland to become a kingdom and I will be the King of Scotland".

"Oh no, Mr Salmond, I don't think that is at all appropriate."

"Well then, your majesty, I think it should be made an empire, and I will be the Emperor of Scotland."

"Oh no, Mr Salmond, I cannot agree to that."

"In that case, your majesty, it must become a republic, and I will be the President of Scotland."

"Mr Salmond, my decision is that Scotland must remain a country. I hope that it is now obvious to you what your title will be."

You never know, the Germans may very well let the Scotts in their country. Oops I mean the French, Greeks and Spainards may let them in the EU.

You need a track record to get EU membership. Even if you outright lie like the Greeks did you need some history.

Scotland is screwed on their own at least in the short term

I was more commenting on the fact that the Germans now run/own the EU (thus Western Europe) that and fact that they have always wanted a piece of that island.

They are welcome to it.

I actually feel sorry for the Germans. They just finished paying for re-unification and had a great future of solid economy, very low unemployment etc when they were stabbed in the pocket book repeatedly by the southern European states.

Why should Scotland care about the EU? The oil can be sold at a better price to the Chinese. Can also serve Haggis whenever and where we want and Stilton Cheese will no longer be banned by the EU's stupid food laws. They get the same work rights in England as any other Commonwealth members. Most Scots don't feel the necessity to subsidize Greece, Portugal or Spain. Heck England didn't join the Euro zone either. A fairly large percentage of what could be the ex-UK would vote to leave the EU if they could. Besides the EU was originally Hitler's idea for a unified Europe, or at least that was what they taught us in school when I went to High School in Zürich (Swiss culture course where a real head trip, taught by a Swiss Army Captain). The Swiss see the EU a bit differently, notice them clamoring to join.
