Commonwealth membership does not give work rights. They will need a visa. And a passport and lots of other hurdles. To sell oil first it has to be there ... And that's a big if. The size of reserves is not assured.

There is also a chasm between adopting the Euro and being a member of the EU.

Countries aligning under common currencies, trade agreements and common policies pre-dates Hitler. In fact it's particularly of note in the country you reside.

Being on the wrong side of the ocean and not being Scottish my opinion is moot other than what I've read and spoke to ENGLISH friends about... having said that. I can't see how this would be good economically for the Scots in the near future. Uncle Douglas has a good point with

I wish the scots success in whatever they choose. I hope they choose based on concrete improvements that will be made rather than an emotional response.

A quote from a vice media article this morning sums it up for me that there is no plan for success ... Empty promises without substance.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond cast his vote at 9am on Thursday morning at Fraserburgh, in the north east of Scotland. Salmond has promised a day of celebration on Friday if the yes vote passes, though an official at the SNP Edinburgh Headquarters said on Wednesday that he wasn't sure whether any concrete arrangements had been made.

I don't have a crystal ball but I would be surprised if the yes votes approach 45% today. Its good that they are having a vote and once the populace has made their will apparent the torch can be laid down by those that have been burning it for 300 years.

Its a bit scary that the polling shows it almost split 50/50.

being 50/50 on a presidential vote isn't bad because that only lasts 4 years... this is forever and if half the country is for it and the other isn't, that sounds like a disaster. But whatever happens I wish them the best.

Interesting that Sean Connery, who can only set foot in Scotland so many days ea year because he's in tax exile,
chose not to go to Scotland and rally for the cause. He has been one of the largest proponents for an independent Scotland.

Not if it is a close vote. A close vote will just keep it going on forever.

Yup if Scotland goes, the cost of independence will be massive. From currency, banking, security, laws, the list is endless. Oil production is shrinking. It's no longer the golden goose. Silicon glen is a call center. Tourism, with a different currency many won't go. Cameron also, if yes wins will quickly face a life on the back benches.

There have been many intimidatory actions. By the yes side. Let's see how it all goes.

GBP has firmed up the last few days. Looks like it's pricing in a "no" vote, but you never know.

a close result is the worst possible outcome .... as the losers will believe they just need to get another referendum to reverse the outcome...

It was all about economics - "better together" won the day. 97% of the population registered to vote and the turnout was impressive.
