Scam central

Have Defenders become the new item of choice for scams and people trying to rip people off?
I mean, with what has all been said about European dealers lately, and even US dealers taking advantage of folks, now there is this:

I just got an email from a potential buyer who sent me pictures of a 90 that is listed for sale.
He decided to contact us because the 90 had an ECR sticker on the back.
He sent me some pictures of the Black 90 and I quickly recognize it as a 90 that is owned by a customer of ours and is actually sitting here at the shop waiting its turn for a galv. frame.
The pictures were old but the scammer was using old pictures to try and sell a truck that is sitting here. Wow. I can't believe what is going on with the Defender market (or maybe this stuff happens all the time and I just don't know about it).

First 2 pix are from the ad.
Pix 3 and 4 are from our shop.

Sticking the VIN in here so it comes up on a search

Mike, thanks for bringing this up, and showing that it's not just over the pond where this is happening.

As the demand for these trucks increases, all these scam artists, cheats and liars are coming out of the woodwork.

Wherever there's money to be made, you will always find people standing by, trying to figure out how to cheat to make theirs instead of working honestly for it.

Common scam with all items. Mostly out of Africa. Take pictures from one ad and make up another.

I usually have fun with them for a little while, and end it with telling them to go fornicate with livestock

these people know no bounds... a friend of mine found our house listed on craigslist for rent. When i called the number the guy answered with a thick african accent using my name and saying he was in Nigeria doing missionary work and looking to rent the house while he was away... i was stunned.

Someone sent me a PM saying my D90 was for sale on Craigslist in PA. The Ad apparently listed my LE number, vin and a TX phone number. I went out in the garage to make sure it was still there!!

Oh, and it was listed for $6,023. Awesome!

about 5 yrs ago I was selling a 90 or 92 range classic, very low mileage, one owner, wonderful specimen
long story short, I had a guy send me numerous emails, and finally a cashiers check for nearly twice the
asking price.
his emails listed a baltimore address, his check was drawn on the name of a church in texas.
the only real thing was the phone of the bank...
I called to verify because it did not seem right, too good to be real..voila it was...
he wanted me to contact X shipper, pay for shipping to africa because he was a missionary teacher or so, send title via fed ex to a third address, keep an extra thousand or two for my troubles up to me depending how I valued my time and give the rest in cash to the driver...

after I learned of the false check I contacted police, they said not much could be done.. I never told the scammer of my actions. he never contacted me again.

eventually I sold the truck...3 yrs later someone from oregon contacted me in regards to the vehicle, I never listed out there, politely I replied the unit had been sold...what a frigging fiasco.
