San Antonio?

Yea, I know this is not even remotely rover related....

I'm visiting San Antonio next week attending a nerd conference (statistical analysis software (SAS) global forum, thousands of geeks and nerds in one place, many of whom I'll have to actually interact with... I know you're all jelous).

I'm staying in a hotel right next to the alamo... so what is there in San Antonio that I need to make sure I don't miss? good places to eat? good music? best bar? other suggestions?

Never been, but I hear that downtown has canals with great shopping and cafes etc. Always wanted to go. Oh, I'm sure a few watering holes as well

No need to leave the downtown area. The Riverwalk is all you need to know. Very unique! Just walk around and enjoy the place. There are a ton of restaurants on the Riverwalk. Maybe somebody can chime in with specific restaurants, but all that I have been to in the past have been pretty good.

Check out the South by Southwest festival - I think it's going on next week. Lots of food and music and the city will be pretty shut down for it.

My brother lives there. You can do the entire walk in a day. Unfortunately, most of the best tex mex places are not downtown.

The Blue Agave was good.

Hit the BBQ place and the Jazz place. Sorry, too many tequila shots to remember the names. They are right on the river walk.

...Austin and ends on the 16th ...

Last time I was in San Antonio (10ish years ago now?) I remember the River Walk to be pretty hit and miss. I was hoping someone might know some specific places...

I'll look for Pee-Wee's bike though... that sounds like a good idea

Brad, I'm a SAS user for a bank, so you're not alone. The defender frees me from the label of geek though.

Expect to see lots of convention types (nerd conference people as you say) getting wild and wacky with a blue margarita by the River Walk. Thanks to Chili's and other chains, at least you no longer suffer listening to them order fa-ji-dahs (fajitas).

If you are there longer than two days, get away from the "let's just walk down the river walk and see what we find" routine. Having visited for similar reasons, there is better to be found.

Northside of the city, about a half hour ride from the downtown area, easily.

I'll get some names if you want...

I used it in grad school and some after. I'm always curious to hear what people do with SAS on the rare chance when the topic comes up.

Think a soft taco where the shell is deep fat fried. A slice of cholesterol-laced heaven. 17 years ago when I was at school down there they were a delicacy to only be found in the shittiest soutside tex-mex diners. I saw them on a Bobby Flay challenge show a few months ago, so I'd imagine they could be found in the tourist hell that is the river walk.
