salvage defender source

So for those of us who are defender lovers(lusters) and wouldn't mind owning that salvage titled defender... what are the best sources of these vehicles?

A quick search on google turns up alot of trucks, but lots of strange click-throughs and seemingly shady auction sites.

any info out there on this? I know salvage titles have a negative connotation with respect to overall long term value of a truck but was kind of interested.

thanx!

Copart is your best option. None right now, though. Search Copart on there though and you'll see there have been plenty through there.

http://www.copart.com

Or on here go to Search --> Advanced Search --> Type "Salvage", and filter by "For Sale - Vehicles", or "Classifieds". There are plenty there as well.

Some salvage titles seem to come from lazy insurance companies, and are a bargain if you can pick them up. Defenders are not like a domestic car sitting on the lake bottom, and can be disassembled and repaired easily enough.

My salvage was purchased from an ebay guy (wayne from maxcar.net) that seems to specialize in damaged/salvaged Defenders. He gets a pretty good price for them too consistently. Haven't really followed him since then. Hopefully competition and the 25 year imports is bringing his prices down. Regardless, he's pricey but credible. You have more options for a 90, but he seemed at the time to have his tentacles on every damaged/salvaged NAS110 that existed. I wanted an NAS witih a bad engine for a diesel conversion and didn't want to pay a premium for a V8 I was going to dump, so I got what I wanted. I also wanted to convert the bulkhead to vented.

Read through this thread. It's relevant to this discussion:

Interesting how Land Rover chose to start their VINs with "SALDV....". I wonder how many new buyers questioned clean titles as salvaged at first glance.

A salvaged certificate and salvage history are different ( covered before ).

As previously said, some insurance company will salvage a defender for numerous stupid reasons, some people will request the insurance to fix it to keep it, some insurance will total it so their recoup is higher with the sale.

I do not believe the salvage history affects the price as much as a Salvage Certificate.

Yeah I don't have a problem with a salvage title. I just want to own a defender once in this life and I don't think that cherry NAS110 or low mileage 97 D90 is in my future.

Thanks for all the tips.
