Safety Device NAS D90 roof racks return (part 2)

I can now, finally, confirm that ECR will be offering genuine Safety Devices NAS 90 (soft top and station wagon) roof rack systems again for the USA market. I have placed the order and everything is confirmed.
We will be selling these mail order to other shops and to DIY customers.
I've been working on this off and on for years.
This is the real deal, made in Europe by Safety Devices (not the copies we have made in the past) and they will be ready for shipping in very early 2009.
The best news is that prices for NEW racks will be about what I have seen used ones trading for.
More details will go up on the ECR site soon, but thought you guys would enjoy the "scoop".

An image of what it looks like on a vehicle here:
http://www.eastcoastrover.com/159.html

We will also be making our version of the roof basket (as I posted about earlier) but Safety Devices will be making our front cross bars and the rear ladder parts for us.

There you go, no April fools this time.

Not really possible. To reach the front mounting point (cross bar) you have to reach forward, and if you only go half way it puts too much leverage (downward) on the front mount and it will bend or break something.
If you just do a basket on the front it is really hard to get to, and Wilderness and some other places make one like that already.

Just FYI, this is a test for SD.
If they get a good batch of sales they will explore other racks (Disco, RR, etc). If they don't, they will drop racks forever. They have looked at all the business models and only with my hassling them have they decided to "try" racks one more time. I can tell you that they will not be developing new racks, only reproducing what they have made before.

Only thing I can tell you for sure about the Disco 1 and D2 racks right now is that there will be only 1 type.
They used to make a low one for cars without sunroofs and grab bars and a high one for cars with sunroofs and grab bars. To streamline things they will only be making the high one from now on as it fits all models.

As to when and how many will be available, I don't know yet.

Right now the thinking is that only 25 of each rack will be made.

Mike,
How about rear ladders for a ROW truck? Something that is chassis to rack that won't block the lights.
Does SD still offer something like this?

Sorry, I don't know.
I'm really just dealing with them on NAS specific stuff.

Just FYI, as of today SD has decided to produce the Disco 1 and D2 roof racks (the high Highlander version (will clear roof grab bars and sunroofs) again. These will be available as a limited production run and a one time thing. They will be making a only a handful of them.

Just off the phone with Safety Devices and the final word on the new NAS D90 racks made in early 2009 is that they will be limited edition numbered units and there will only be 25 made.
We will be selling them on a first come first served basis and the price will still be roughly where I have seen good used ones selling for.
Just FYI.

Thanks!
