Rovers North Tops

I have "heard" that Rovers North no longer sells Badger tops anymore, the tops they sell are "copies" of the Badger tops. I guess it is cheaper for Rovers North to just copy Badger then to buy the real thing and resell it. So for all of you thinking about buying a top from Rovers North relize that it is NOT a Badger.

I don't know, but they are not made by Badger.

I talked to the guy at Badger and he told me that is the case. RN in the past bought his tops, but then copied his product and sold it to BestTop for them to prdouce. I am not for certain it's Bestop, but that what comes to mind. Same look, but not even close to the quality and CUSTOMER SUPPORT that you get from Badger. You get what you pay for. I have a Badger on my 90 and I wouldn' trade it for anything. Give a call to Badger if you want, he will give you the whole story. He is a cool guy and has been working on Rovers for a long time.

I talked to Bestop at SEMA- they aren't making it. I heard it somewhere overseas... and not towards the "Homeland"

I have not seen any of the "new" tops that Rovers North is selling, but my bet is it would be very hard for them to come close to the same quality as Badger for the price, specially if has to be shipped over here from the UK or "other" countries.

But what I really don't think is cool is the fact they copied Badgers top! And they are selling these imitation tops, I wonder how many people are getting tops from Rovers North thinking they are buying a Badger top but are getting a cheap knock off.

Used to be Tickford. They produced the OEM tops for Land Rover.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the page states:

Quote:
In 1990 we developed and manufactured the original Land Rover Defender 90 North American Specification (NAS) hood for Land Rover.
Uh, we didn't see the NAS until 1994 (or 93 for some early ones). Or am I missing something from the d-90 heritage?

My guess, they are from the UK, they think the first year for the Defender (1990) is also the first year for the NAS.

So if I have this straight, RN has contracted to get tops from the company that made such awful tops that the bestop was considered an improvement? That sounds like a winner.

Although I suspect they didnt copy the badger per se, since the RN top was always a higher-quality version of the bestop manufactured by badger. My understanding was that it never used the gutter kit but rather used the original bestop hardware.

If I bought a top from RN and they said it was a Badger and it turned out it wasnt. I would return it pronto.

Thats a bait and switch tactic

Believe it or not, I actually liked my Tickford top. The material held up fairly well, much better than the Bestop tops I had on my Wrangler way back when. I also didn't really have any issues with the snaps. That is until some bright guy in the dealer's service popped one, probably snapping it on and off repeatedly like a two year old.

I've heard that it's an exact knockoff of the Badger, not a version of the Besttop.

I've still got my original Tickford. It works fine for me and is in good shape even after 12 years. Of course, I only use it about 2 months a year and it spends most of its time in storage. A couple snaps are gone but I could easily get those replaced if it bothered me that much.

I perfer the canvas Tickford top to the plastic Bestop as well. The snaps are an easy DIY fix. I bought a snap repair kit at Home Depot that included the snaps and the flanging tool for under $5.
