Yeah, maybe not. My Dad just spoke to a buddy that's a fellow Vietnam-era SEAL whose been working in Iraq. He said it's much more stressful than jungle combat with the VC...he said the guy had that shellshocked look...and he did three tours in the 60's/70's. Not nearly as enjoyable as we might think...

I'm going out on limb to say that "military" Land Rover on ebay (see page 1) is not quite what it claims to be. For one it says 1980 body with 91 engine. That it is not - 90s did not start till 84 and Defenders till 89. TDi engines came in in 91 I think. The body and interior is 91 Defender. As by the looks of it is the drive train. Nothing "1980" about it...except the VIN plate maybe.......Hummer outperforming claims are somewhat optimistic, H2s yes, but but H1s....depends on conditions and terrain. The towing rating is simply because in UK they use a different rating system. A standard Disco has an 8,000 lbs rating in Uk but way less here. Just a function of weight of pulling vehicle. No way a Defender will our pull a Hummer.

There is a cross post here that I already posted in but most likely it is a '91. And it is not a TDi, it is a Di. They do get every bit of 30MPG, problem is they produce a whopping 65 B.H.P, and a lot of smoke. Oh, and it can and does tow that much, it has more to do with rigidity of the frame than anything else. Of course, good luck pulling that much at more than 20 MPH. And come on, it will outperform a hummer in most terrain, the Hummer just plain has too much body on it.

Seen the other thread now. Isnt it an iDi engine? The 8000 lbs is also for braked trailers only I think too. As for outperforming Hummers, on open ground/mud bogs I doubt it - Hummer has more ground clearance, more torque, bigger tires. Of course on many trails it is far too fat and just won't fit. The H1 also has hardly any room in it. I remember LR in Solihull telling me that the Americans realised in the Gulf that the Defender 110 had greater carrying capacity, used a fraction of the fuel, and was just as able to cross the terrain as a Hummer. H2s are crap of course!

While not in Iraq, here are some cool military photos of Defenders...although I read that the ones with all the armament are called "WMIK"s (what's that, anyway?) They look like 110's to me.

Rovers in War

Hi guys. I frequent this board almost daily but rarely post. However, I could not resist responding to this thread. I am a US Army helicopter pilot currently serving in Afghanistan. The US Defenders here are holding up very well and serving with distinction. The Rovers play a major role in combat operations and work hard for the boys in the fight. I'll try to have a few pics approved for publication through Intelligence and post a few thumbnails for you all to see.

Didn't we talk a while ago about US troops having D90s in Afghanistan?

Ford did not even bid on the new military contract. It went to Pinzgauer. I have seen the new replacement for the Hummer called the "Flyer" It has 3 models but is smaller and lighter than the hummer. Very cool with a buggy inspired suspension. You will most likely never see another new Defender in any army. bummer.

Yeah, bummer. I'm sure Ford will keep the name because of the heritage, but probably the only thing it will be defending anymore is Starbucks.
