I said this relates to vehicles brought into the USA from abroad.

I know, I am just looking for confirmation and clarification. Once a 25 year old vehicle is eligible/exempt does that that mean that the engine is exempt as well? I find it hard to believe that the engines on the currently 25 year old eligible vehicles passes EPA requirements. If that is the case then the 300tdi engine would become exempt and legal to import and own in the US in a few years. Can someone confirm?

The main reason for all this is the amount of stolen defenders from the UK finding their way to the USA, you can't sell a RHD TD5 double cab for less than $25k............. 2 yrs ago i saw one for sale on the east coast and i could'nt even buy one and ship it for the price it was for sale for. The UK police are cracking down, so this may also have something to do with it.

I hope the trucks havent already been taken to the DHS office in Raleigh.

The NAS style rear bumper that CDeWan just had fabricated for me is currently en route to GB4x4 as well. I dont know if anyone will even be there to receive it.

This may turn into a giant fiasco. A giant, and expensive fiasco.

Think they will have a problem with the fact that its a 300tdi and that Sals is now a D1?
Other than lawyering up, seriously consider contacting your Congressman/woman. There is nothing that will get Fed red tape cleared up faster than a call from a congressional staffer... and almost all congressmen will want to bend over backwards to help a deployed servicemember, especially when the media is already involved. This clearly is a federal case so it's something they can help with, and it's not dealing with the VA so you won't get lumped in to the regular "VA sucks" queue.

Isn't it ironic that the Defender has become the next species that needs protection from poaching.

My Stage One dies not have catalytic converters. Presumably, it was exempted when imported. Whenever I have imported a vehicle, part of the documentation package includes a DOT/EPA exemption letter.

See: http://www.epa.gov/oms/imports/documents/420b10027.pdf

Table 3.1
If I read that correctly, which I probably don't, if the engine is 21 years or older, and not a US or Canada engine, you get an exemption.

It was silly until "I" got one of those letters

And that was after I had a new 4.6 seized by CBP/ DHS until I could prove it was "fundamental similar" if not identical to a type-accepted engine.

When that engine was seized, the firs thing the customs agent said was "is it a diesel, we're onto you Land Rover guys". Further, he claimed they were destroying several TDis a week and at least two trucks each week for non-conforming engines.

Waiting anxiously for MY call from CBP/ DHS.

85red110 my hope is that the Feds seized everything on the basis of guilty until proven otherwise.
I would definitely leverage your deployment via your representatives in Congress to get it released.
It would make them do something useful for once.

Someone definately tipped off the Feds to have them check out this business. They round up all trucks and sort out whats legal and whats not. I find it interesting the neighbor said "all these cars (Rovers) rolled in last week" to a once up for rent property. Sounds like someone or a business tipped this off to try and cut out a competitor. I may be 100% wrong but it smells fishy.

the "Whitey Bulger" of the Defender world.
Afforded protection while simultaneously allowed to eliminate competition.

What are the odds that no Fed-agent ever makes it up to Rockland, ME where there is argueably the "mother load" of TDi and TDCi motors? With all of Mike's "friends" he has made its incredibly hard to believe that they wouldnt' show up on his doorstep...........unless.....

I guess we will see how this plays out. Theoreticaly the court proceedings should reveal why Dr. Aaron was suspect. If its an "anonymous tip" or confidential informant that really sucks and there are a lot of people on this board who have a strong guess who it would be.

Amazing how "300Tdi" is disappearing from so many profiles here. Do people seriously think the government is going to come after them for a post-import engine swap?

On another note, the sour grapes comments on that WCET story are remarkable. Who is posting this shit?
