Rooftop Tent Buying Review - Odin Designs

Not sure if this belongs in Misc Chic-Chat or elsewhere - admins, please move if I've placed this in the wrong section.

After several months of research and trying different tents, I just finished the purchase and installation of a roof top tent from Odin Designs (Odin Designs Home Page - Odin DesignsOdin Designs | Outdoor and Camping gear) in Castle Rock, Colorado. Full disclosure: I have zero affiliation with this business.

We went with the 4-person Type E tent which includes the upgraded YKK zippers and skylights. Having used ARB, Tepui, and Smittybuilt tents, I am thoroughly impressed with this tent and the quality of the design so far. The owner, Reuben, has been incredibly helpful and worked his tail off in the 95-degree heat installing the tent for us. Everything about the experience has been great, especially considering Odin Designs is a newer business.

We installed the tent on our Subaru for an upcoming 4-week trip through the PNW for two reasons: 1) we're going to cover a little over 4,000 miles and our Subaru is just much more comfortable for this type of trip than our 110 and 2) as much as it saddens me, I cannot find the time between now and our departure to finish window seals and the final re-assembly of the 110 to have it ready for the trip. It looks a little ridiculous on top the Subaru and will look much better on the 110, but this will do for now. It handled well on the highway driving 70-75 MPH back to the Springs and did not impact our MPG as much as I thought it would averaging 32.8 MPG.

I feel very few people have heard of Odin Designs and, so far, I'm tremendously impressed. Once we get back from the trip and living out of the tent over the next 4 weeks, I'm going to post a more detailed review of the tent and our experience. If anyone is in the market or just interested in learning more about this tent and this business, check back. Also, if anyone has specific questions or things they'd like me to check out or pay special attention to during our use, let me know. We start sleeping in it tonight, so this is very much an ongoing review.

Excellent Tent and Company

After just about a month in the tent, I have had a thorough opportunity to get familiar with the tent. Overall, I'm incredibly impressed. I was a little concerned about highway performance, especially since highway speeds across Utah are 80 MPH, but the tent was incredibly stable and did not hurt the vehicle performance very much. As I'll probably never be going that fast with the 300Tdi 110, I don't think I'll have any issues on the highway with this tent!

A few notable things stood out about the tent. 1) the skylights provided both nice airflow (even in the rain as they're covered) as well as a great view of the stars. 2) the annex is adjustable so it can be shortened for a small vehicle like the Subaru and full length for a Land Rover. 3) the mattress was amazingly comfortable and ventilation in the tent made for incredible nights sleep. 4) the quality of the zippers, seams, and fabric really impress me and I have confidence it will hold up very well to many years of use / abuse.

Overall, this tent has been a great purchase and I have been very happy with my interaction with Odin Designs. This tent is VERY spacious inside (four adults easily), comfortable, easy and fast to open/close, and built with great materials. I'm very much looking forward to finishing the 110 refurbishment (just the headliner, seats, carpeting, and middle door latches to go!) and getting this tent up on that roof rack where it belongs.

The nice weather season is still here. Let's get outside and explore some more.

I want to! But the G has a fuel injector issue (OM617) to fix first!

It's the 4-person Type E with the annex which comes standard. It's HUGE inside.
