Roof Top Tents and NAS Cage\Basket

How many folks use a Roof Top Tent on the NAS Cage\Basket? How did you set it up? Pictures?

Do you think you could do something similar with a half rack like the Wilderness rack sold by Atlantic British.
Just wondering if it could handle a tent up there with such a small footprint.

(Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics)

Honesty, I don't really know. My first thought is no, only because the tent is so large and heavy, and I don't know about how that basket mounts. Maybe someone else can chime in, but i have never seen it done on a half rack like that. Not saying it won't work though.

Thanks.

I think that if you took the basket and mount off, and started from scratch thinking about a mount for the tent it could work. I am sure a fabricator could work something up pretty quickly.

Well these are fancy set ups. What about old school - I am told that Home Depot has 1/2 inch metal electrical tubing which can be connected together to make an A frame on either end of the roof rack, then with a cross bar you can hang a tarp hung over it. You want to go 4 star, add an air mattress and solar garden lights and boom, you are set. (oh you need a grill inside the cage to make this work best).

Thanks for asking this question. I was wondering the same thing.

Shawn...cool setup.

Are those special mounts that fit the cage?

I ditched the basket and had a custom rack made with no front. I think it looks and works better than the factory rack, but I know a lot of people dig the factory style.

I used white 3/4 inch x 6 inch vinyl fencing slats trimmed to fit the cage contained with u bolts. Then, i found a high quality two person MSR tent to fit. Inside the tent, I used a heavy sleeping bag zipped fully open to line the floor. the vinyl is just pliable enough and the bag provides some cushion. it's perfect, light and very portable.

Shawn or anyone else that may be doing the same. Could you post pics of how you have your tent with your SD rack. Only one of the links to photo bucket is still working and I would really like to see more photos of how you did it. Just day dreaming about getting a roof top tent right now. I really don't want to cut up my SD rack. Maybe just fabrication of my own is what I will need to do. Just what I need another project idea.

Well, I must have deleted them off the photobucket server. I will take more pics. It is mounted to the trailer now, but using the same mounts I used for the SD rack. I bought it all at Home Depot.

I honestly think the simplest solution is to remove the rack, connect the front cross bars to the rear ladder with something (like steel tube or whatever depending on how nice you want to do it), attach the tent to the bars, and add a rigid flooring (starboard, plywood, etc) to take up the extra space behind the tent (assuming you mount the tent up front).

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I was really hoping that I could get away without cutting or removing the basket on the SD rack. It looks like that may not be all that easy. Althought not impossible.

Thanks Shawn for the other pic. If you find anymore of your old set up I would love to see them.

Michael
