Roof Top Tents

I am interested in getting a roof top tent for 2 adults and 2 young children. How well do the gutters hold up to this type of loading. With the weight of the tent the total weight would be in the range of 500 to 550lbs.

I know very few that will put over 200 lbs. on a gutter system...that doesn't mean it isn't done but, most that carry larger loads use an expedition system that doesn't distribute the weight in/on the rails. A tent that will hold four and all of the other stuff...500 lbs. seems a bit much.

What's it going on ?

That's a large tent, my medium sized Autohome Overzone is on a reinforced rack as it gets quite a hammering when your crawling around in the tent. It's not just the static weight that you need to consider

Would suggest a good HD rack for it.... here's mine....

To fit a family of four you are talking about 1600 (min) or 1800 (ideal), but that's a lot of weight up there. I have a 1400 and it's a little tight for my wife and 2 kids (6&9) when I take them camping. I sleep in the annex underneath or a hammock outside.

It would be on a Disco 2 or a 110. The weight I mention is the weight of the tent and everyone in it. I was originally thinking of using Thule or Yakima bars. My thinking was not to increase the total weight by adding a full roof rack and I would like something that I could swap from one vehicle to the other. Initially it would be on the 04 D2. The 110 is undergoing surgery.

Static load, you could put 1000lbs on the roof and it would be fine. Since you are not driving around with people in the tent ....
