Rock Ware Bumper

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered my Rock Ware bumper with the tire carrier this week. They are so busy there is a 2 month wait. Crap!

The desire is to get that 285 off the rear door and using one of my (soon to come) fancy jack mounts, get that hilift off the rack. They only down side is the rear passengers will have to be let out...the gate only opens from the outside. If it wasn't for the other armor from Rock Ware thats already on the truck I might consider something else, but I want to keep it all the same. They make some cool stuff its just not mass produced.

Is anyone else running with their bumper or armor?

I just received my winch bumper and sliders from Matt and I'm considering getting the rear bumper/tire carrier as well. He sent me some photos and it's pretty sweet. Kind of a different placement for the jerry can carrier, in between the spare and the tailgate. I like how it wraps around to protect the rear quarter panels.

do you have photos?

this is the set up I have now. I do have his bumper on the front but it doesnt have the bar. Considering getting a new front Rock Ware bumper in the spring with the bar. My only draw back is I have a Rock Ware roof rack and the right ladder has to be modified to have the bumper fit. I'm going to have him modify it...but it wont be very useful for me in the end because I want to go with a Wolf rack. So I will be selling those bumperets and the rack in about three months.

Does Matt make just the rear corner guards? Or is it just full rear bumper only?

I have them. I like it pretty well. Had I known that it was going to rattle around this much I probably wouldn't have gotten the tire carrier.
I would ask Matt to use some heavier gauge box tube for the tire carrier as it flexes a bit when the tire is on there. The flexing can make a bit of a rattle for the Jerry cans. I put in leftover dynamat I had to stop the cans from rattling, but the whole arm does jiggle around. I thought about drilling holes in it and filling the box tube with something to stiffen it up. Or maybe weld something on it to stiffen it. But it's powder coated so....

I will ask about the tube. I'm not doing the Jerry can set up. I like the front bumper but I think I will not do the angles bars over the head lights.

I installed a ST tire carrier on my SW. It looked factory and opened with the door, with no noise. Mantec is also a nice option.

it's a Warn 9500lbs. it's pretty good but I've never tried another brand. A friend of mine wants to buy the Warn with the built in compressor. A winch is a must In my opinon.

Just got my front a week ago and custom rear in the works right now. Will take Picts when both are installed.

Should look sweet on a ROW 90
Matt has been asking for more than normal measurements as he has never done one on a drop down tailgate.

Bought my front and rear bumpers from Matt in '99 and just had them re-powdercoated as part of a freshening of my rig. Although some people on the board selling rear corner protection think they are ugly, I think the rear bumper is sex in a box and the added hoops have definitely saved the corners while actually playing in the rocks...

I'm having him powder coat mine too, wasn't sure what I should go with. Hopefully the PC is as good as the welding. I'd hate to see it peel off.

I think it will be great. Both bumpers are 13yrs old and this was the first time they have been refinished... Needless to say I'm still thrilled with my original purchase.

For those with rattle issues, you may want to consider adding a grommet to dampen out the vibration of the swing arm. Check out McMaster for grommets with a threaded post. Then tap the back side of your carrier and add a lock nut. Adjust it so it applies just enough pressure on your back door. See the attached images. You have to look closely, but you can see the grommet on the center of the carrier, and you can see the impression on the plate I used to replace the original tire carrier on the back door. Pretty simple but works well. It's been 3 years and I've had no vibrations on my truck, or the other bumper I built for a buddy's truck. You can see the latch set-up is more simple than Matt's, so by adding this grommet I'm confident it will tight up his bumpers. Mark
