Rita may claim one of the Rovers...

Things are getting pretty crazy here in Houston. The freeways are like parking lots and people are starting to break down and run out of gas sitting on the road.

All of my family in the Houston area live in the Clear Lake area in the storm surge area on the bay. On Tuesday my brother brought his boat up (I'm in The Woodlands) and left it along with his truck and took the '95 Range Rover (Classic SWB) back with him so they would be able to pack more inside between it and his wife's Land Bruiser. He has not been able to find fuel since he left here (80 miles from the coast) and is now sitting on the 45 still south of the city. He called an hour and a half ago and told me he may end up having to ditch the RR when/if it runs out of gas

Man, I just watched the flyover of the highways down there over lunch. That is insane.

So far they have been on the road 8 hours (for what normally is a 1 hour 15 minute drive). I spoke with him about 20 minutes ago and he is now just trying to keep the RR from overheating. They have another 15 miles or so to go so it will most likely be another hour or an hour and a half. Looks like gas is going to make it. Fortunately they are close enough now that if it does run out I'll just head over to them with a trailer and get it.

That's crazy. I feel so bad for Texas right now. Not only is Rita gonna come in, but you just took all those refugees in, which I'm sure is spending all kinds of money not on the budget, but now you're going to have to pay for this too. And since you all actually have a PLAN to get out, the people are actually getting out, and you didn't spend your disaster money on F-150s you're gonna get blamed for getting more aid than you actually are and there's gonna be this giant media to-do over it.

Either way, I'm happy everyone is getting out, and I'm sorry it's such a PITA

I am trying to get back to Austin right now...once I get back I will check this thread and see if I can do anything to help. I think we have run out of bottled water in Austin, but last I heard gas is still available.

Gas is out at some stations according to a guy in my dept who went out at lunch to fill up. But we went north of 290 which is a major road for people coming into town. I got gas at lunch no problem south of 290.

Water wont be a problem for me, I have about a million plastic coke bottles in my recyle bag form this week... quick rinse, fill up at the water sout in the fridge and I am set. Just need to get Coca-cola now. Oh, I guess some food too.

If you're keeping it in a plastic bottle don't get it from the fridge, the filter will pull out the chlorine and make your water taste better, but also allows anything that got in it to proliferate. You're better off pulling it from the tap and putting up with the chlorine taste (since that means nothing's growing in it, theoretically).

Follow-up Post:

sorry, done way too many tests on GAC filters

Came in on fumes but the Rangie made it! She did try to overheat on him a couple times. Looks at the moment like the hurricane is going to go in further to the east and we will be able to stay put and be fine.

Hopefully they will get fuel out to these people on the freeways so they can get the hell outta there soon.

Kev,

Is Mike and his family with you guys also?

I'm sorry to hear about all the troubles your brother had (as well as all the millions of other people going through it).

The important thing is they made it there.

Now, all we can do is sit tight and try to stay as safe as possible.

Please let us know if you guys need anything.

We're keeping you guys in our prayers along with all the others we know in the area.

Melissa B.

Mike's parents live up in Chicago and they kept a lake house at Livingston. They went up there on Tuesday. The rest of our family that live in Clear Lake left on Tuesday as well for different destinations to the north and west. Only one stayed in Brookwood in Clear Lake - something to do with their job - to which I said, "@#$& your job" but oh well...everyone has to make their own decisions.

Looking good here right now.
