Right Hand Drive in New England

Hello All,

I am in the market for a defender, and looking at my options I realized that a significant amount were right hand drive. While RHD is cool talking point and fun in the country, I was wondering if the community had any input on the pros and cons of living with a right hand drive defender. Does it make life difficult or driving more dangerous? I'm not concerned about drive-thrus, but about little things that might irk me or worry me and compound to the point where I don't enjoy driving my rover.

For some context: I am a college student in New England. I'd drive the rover as my college car, driving around campus, groceries, taking my girlfriend on dates, camping trips nearby. I have a 250 mile commute between campus and home. I take Coach home and to school when the weather is bad. I average about 2000-3000 miles per year.

If you come up to the Burlington VT area I have a LHD 110 and RHD series. You are more then welcome to take them for a drive.

RHD ex mod 90/110 is best value for the money right now. Also some nice deals on series popping up from time to time.

Thanks for that! I live in NYC (pseudo NE I know) and commute to Ithaca, NY for school. I'd be happy to come up to VT for a day. I was actually eyeing a RHD 90 in Dorset on eBay. My dad owns a '94 soft top 90 LHD, so worst case scenario I could trade with him, because his rover is purely recreational.

"Today, New England is defined as made up of the six states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont."

I've not found the RHD to be a problem. It's a little roomier on the RH side, they're cheaper to buy and given that we drive on the RH side there's very little to get really use to IME.

Ezpass like said above.

Drive throughs suck but don't eat that garbage anyway.

Hardest part will be finding a place to work on it when it breaks down.

RHD is easy.

The only issue I ever had with my RHD truck was in one scenario.

When I was at a major intersection and was turning left and someone was on the opposite side of the intersection also turning left (their left/my right); it was/is very difficult to see around them if you are yielding to oncoming traffic. I generally just waited and pissed the people behind me off.

Otherwise, no issue…….I'd own another RHD truck in a second.

Parking garages are not super fun to get in and out of, but hey I'm not switching cars or jobs because of that.
