Re Titling a Defender in PA bought in TN

All

As a recent import into the country (5 years from UK) I am still learning about your laws and especially the differences between states. I have struck a deal to but a defender from TN and will need to re title (terminology?) in PA. Does anyone know what the process is and what paperwork I will need?

Thanks
Mark

Go to Motor Vehicles and bring your checkbook. It's not that big of a deal, you will only have to go 2-3 times

Does it already have a TN title? That's straightforward, but for PA make sure the current owner signs the title in front of a notary. PA won't accept a title with just a signature.

You might go to the Pa. DMV and ask them in person EXACTLY what you will need to get from the seller and bring them.

PA doesn't have a DMV for titling/registering cars. You go to AAA or a notary.

You need the signed and notarized title from the seller, a bill of sale, proof that you have insured the car and your checkbook.

If they have third party options it's worth paying the fee to get it done in 20 minutes instead of a half day.

Hi yes it will have TN title. So if I get that signed and notarized and have the bill of sale will I need anything else?

Thanks

Easy peasy. Go to auto tag place, walk out with a plate. Best Auto tags is who I use. I have known the owner for a long time. You will have to pay the sales tax (6-8% depending on where you are) and a few fees ($100). If you want to save the auto tag place fee, you can mail it in yourself. Just make sure the TN title is properly filled out. I had one issue as for a ROW truck it had to be mailed to Harrisburg but that was on my original import. Harrisburg is very efficient and I had the plate in 10 days (which half was probably time to mail it there and get the plate back).

Proof of insurance. (Any car gives you 30 days so it does not have to be for that vehicle). Drivers license. Money (checks) for sales tax.

I had a small issue transferring my already titled in PA 86 110, but my local notary handled things competently for me. I'd be happy to forward her contact info if you have any trouble.....

As we're moving back to US from Switzerland, anyone have any tips on getting PA title, etc with a Swiss title?

Vehicles are US spec that we brought over, however, we now have Swiss titles.

We had to hand in the US titles to register them here.

Thanks!

First thing I'd try is simply requesting a duplicate title from PA, hoping they still have it on file. If so, forget it was ever titled in Switzerland.

Coming from NY originally this was the hardest thing for me to understand. He's right, have the title notarized beforehand (when its being signed over) then show up with the stuff he's mentioned above.

Import docs and the swiss title (pretty sure you need a translation) mail it to Harrisburg, wait 10 days, PA sends you your stuff. Tag places can't do out of country stuff, maybe they could because they are US spec vehicles, not sure on that one.

Go to Wiggins. Ask them what they need and go from there.

No affiliation they are just nice and easy to deal with. Notaries can be a pain at times so that is why I always go there.

Yes I was going to go to Wiggins at Oxford. I have had good experiences with them in the past.

Thanks Ron et all.

And good point on translation as yes, I know what it says, yet, others will not.

Sorry for the hijack, yet, it was PA related.

Best.
