Question about the Roll Cage

Pardon my ignorance...

I've noticed that some Defenders don't have a top middle bar going across the roll cage. Is this based on year?

Maybe I'm not understand you or you aren't picking up what I'm laying down. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about...I've circled the area.

The metal portion you circled pops out of the actual roll bar. it is removable.

Ahh! Ok, thanks Kurt and Kris. That's great news...I would like to get that part repainted/powdercoated.

Be careful driving around once you get it loose.
They have been know to fall off and they aren't easy to replace
(of course mine is rusted in place)

After I bought my fiberglass top, I just took it off, although I now wonder if it would be better to have left it on for more support. I'm just not sure if the top will fit with that bar on. Either way, its in the garage collecting dust along with the soft top.

Ok, I'm not thrilled with the rusting torx sockets on thes bolts. Now don't hesitate to call me stoopid, but isn't stainless too far from aluminum on the galvanic corrosion scale to be used without damaging the bodywork?

edit...

Ok, nice discussion at http://www.practicalmachinist.com/cg...1;t=011010;p=0 that I haven't fully digested yet...
