Porsche 944, I've got an itch.

I've been thinking about buying a 944. Anyone here have experience with these? I've heard they are good and robust, but very expensive if something goes wrong. Looks like a good one can be had for $6500 to $10k. Any thoughts?

I had most all of them

Stay away from pre S or even better S2, unless of course is a 951 ( turbo )

For 10k you can easily get a S2 or even a Cabrio S2

Fun cars, great truck cars ( with the right work done you can give the run for the money to many cars in the truck ).

I call BS on been so expensive to be fix, do not listen to the anti 944 people *LOL*

Also the 968 is the aftermath of the 944, almost same car with the 6spd tranny and obtainable for 10ish

If 10k is your budget , a Boxster can be had as well if you like mid engines

Loved mine, tracked that thing every chance I had, summit point, lime rock, poconos, Watkins and few other.

Lived on the redline for couple of hours and still drove back home

Good looking and handling car, but I would not call it a reliable track car. Before you THINK about putting a 944 on the track, read this article.
http://blog.caranddriver.com/lemons-...ding-porsches/
We see new and old 944 teams at VIR, CMP, and SP and the ending is much the same.... they break down, blow up, and take a lot of time and $$ for basic repairs. Go find a E30 325 for 25% the cost and you will be lapping 944s every weekend.

Thanks Scott I will.
I don't want it for a track car, just to drive to work and look cool and have fun. The 944 was hot when I was in high school. I always liked them. I had 280zx which I loved, but want to try the 944.

Yes, a 968 that runs HPDE at SP and is a regular at Great Falls C&C. Nicely set up.

loved my 88 951 (944 turbo) tuned by turbo dynamics in laurel md..(porshe specialists)
they massaged that engine from a factory of nearly 280bhp @ fly wheel to about 510 bhp@ wheels, it was a very very fast, very reliable daily driver for 3 yrs until I had the bright idea of tracking it @ summit point... lost it and slammed the wall with left rear @ between 90 to 100 mph... it looked like a kidney, it had all kinds of neat things, over 20k invested, sold on ebay for 1k.
it hurt me to see it go but didn't have a choice.... been thinking of a 968 lately, maybe a 928...
another 944t or 911 if priced right.. 911t is fun but.. too pricey now adays.

The 944's are great little cars.. Prefer the turbo body to the non turbo (front and rear bumpers and skirting is different). Lots of bang for your buck and a really fun little car.. And let's face it..it's cool to own a Porsche but you have to say it correctly..Porsche-a... Have worked on many of them and never had anyone bring em in with anything major... Plenty available in the aftermarket industry to improve both performance and appearances also..go for it. Worst that can happen is that you don't like it and you sell it and lose $500 bucks after 6 months..

I had a 944 turbo a while ago. Car stuck to the ground and was fast, very difficult to work on since the engine is packed in there. I remember a bunch of stuff had to come off to do some small stuff. As far as speed it stacked up with the 911 I had, which IMO is the second greatest car ever made.
Good luck.

I tell you my spec

TURBO PERFORMANCE CENTER in Jessup MD. and do me a favor, if you ever see Tom in the track, show him the specs LOL

BTW, next time you compare laps, get the data for Watkins and Lime of both Marquee, might be something nice to look at
