playing with logo's

is anyone here good with logo creating software ? @ Charles suggestion I loaded Gimp on my machine but its way over my head. Wanted to play with the LR logo- remove the text and insert

Dividing Creek
Rover Imports

in a similar all caps slanted font

anyone here adept @ this sort of thing ? Gimp is supposed to allow you to save the base graphic as a layer and then remove the text and type in whatever you want. I'm sure it does,
I just can't figure out how.

Doug,

Shoot me an email at paul (at) reflexivedesign (dot) com, and I'll take a crack at it tomorow when I have some down time. If you sketch something rough on paper and scan/email to me that would be even beter -- I can do it in Photoshop or Illustrator for you.

Hey Doug,
Newbie opinion: Doesn't **E V E R Y O N E** in the Rover game use the Land Rover oval for their logo? I guess not... but it sure seems popular in Rover circles to use a play on the Rover oval.

I like the company name (are you on dividing creek? I meant to see the chart), but it may be a bit cliche to use the oval... just IMHO - been inundated w/ ovals since I started researching.

Now that Ford is no longer at the helm, you may avoid the legal harassment of any trademark/logo issues.

I think the use of Rover and the oval might have triggered a cease and desist letter. They went after quite a few people.

Given the number of company's using the oval shape-nearly everyone in a rover mag thats not a concern. Cliche/done before, sure, but I need to come up with something and want to try this.

Yes the house is on Buckingham Cove on Dividing Creek off of the Magothy River off of the Chesapeake Bay off of the North Atlantic. About a 130 miles inland but still salt/brackish water. The kids catch blue crabs from our pier. Charles messed around with my website and now the Yahoo map showing that is MIA.

If you guys have more creative idea's for a logo, throw them out there. I'm not a left side of the brain kind of guy. In fact most days the right side is questionable.

Dividing Creek Rover Imports.

Use the name to create the image. Rovers ford rivers, streams, and creeks. The water dividing us and Land Rover land is the Atlantic, which necessitates them being imported.

Maybe feature some stylized image of a Rover fording the Atlantic from the UK to the US. Or maybe just show a Rover fording a creek. This logo will reinforce the business name.

Just an idea.

Robert my invoices feature a color watermark of a 110 up to the bonnet crossing a mountain stream ( the same shot that opens my website below) Its full page color and a very cool effect (thanks Yvonne). So I'm right there with you- was just looking for something simple that would go well on a business card and @ the top of the invoice/bills of sale.
This is a hobby business so half the fun is playing with stuff like this.

Maybe show the Rover on a side profile biased to far to one side, and have the water serve as the line going across the top of the page or bottom of card.

Doug, here’s my idea, but it’ll cost you (j/k):
It’s “dividing creek”, you’re selling Rovers, ultimately a lifestyle vehicle… I’d envision something like this…
A circle/oval. 2d creek winding up the middle, Defender silhouette to the right of the creek, facing away from it. Tree behind rover. To the left of the creek should be a city skyline melting into the mountains on the right in the background. There might be a path ending at the creek, which, presumably the Rover just forded. Simple 2d figures and suggestive emblematic stuff, but… when I saw your co name that’s the image I had in my head.

All that after you try the Rover logo, of course. (hmmm… maybe using the Rover zig-zag line modified into a winding creek?).

Follow-up Post:

shoulda read the rest of the thread, it seems I'm late to the think-tank party... again. LOL

That seems to do the job. If you decide you want something more complex down the line (an illustration of a 110 fording through a creek with a nice bow wave for example) just let me know.

Is there much of a market importing Rovers cars? That's how I read the logo. You don't want old P3 and P6 owners calling up now do ya.

Um, you should have mentioned that advise #1 was to post here. Giving it a shot yourself with excellent open source software was #2

Whoooaa, easy now fella. First, I never touched your map, but if you think I screwed it up, why didn't you just tell me? I see a map on your contact us page. Is that what you are talking about? What's missing exactly?

Usually, a "thanks for helping me out" is appropriate. Jeesh.

how about a rover on a wooden raft in the middle of waters no where with a guy on top of all the stuff that sits on his roof rack with a set of binoculars as if searching for the shore.

Follow-up Post:

Charles,

It disapeared for about a day and a half and then reapeared. Probably a problem with yahoo maps. I just haven't had a chance to call you. Tried up loading a few and then saw the 50 meg limit notice so I may have messed it up.
Like you with the diff's, where's the fun in not trying it yourself- was trying to learn but quickly realized it wasn't going to happen.

No worries. You can't break much (and there isn't much to break), although I do suggest making backups so you can revert back if you don't like the changes you made.

Failed miserably. Despite my desire to understand and learn, I'm sorely missing my D90, and it's a pretty expensive mistake to make if I F it up. I'm sending them to GBR so I know its done right.

What I should have done was bought 2 third members and rebuilt those so I didn't have down time and there would be no rush. Live and learn.

Charles, I still have that third member and I have spare rear axles to fit it. Drop the front drive shaft and be a poser for a while.
