Cool PAY PAL Scam?

I have a guy that wants to buy one of my cars and wants to go through PP. Has anyone done this? Is it a scam?

The guy is in Sacramento.

It happens, but insist on the deposit through PP, and certified check or whatever you feel most comfortable with for the remainder.

I don't think that there is a way to scam with Paypal yet. I would contact Paypal just to make sure.

I agree with Josh on this one. There is too much fine print with Paypal. It's good for ebay crap and small things.

There are very easy ways for a buyer to claim something was other than as described, and paypal has a history of siding with buyers.

I agree with Horsey, Cert check for the bulk (after the paypal payment clears)
Check out this link -> https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?c...ler_protection
I know the shipping issues aren't really applicable for selling a car (confirmed address, etc) but there might be something in there that could guide you.

There are MANY ways to scam with paypal. You could have your money tied up for a long time before they get it right. Paypal won't recognize a written Bill of Sale even if it is signed by both parties....

I had a guy that wanted to buy my Disco for his Uncle. He said he was overseas with the Red Cross and wanted to pay with Paypal and have the vehicle picked up by his shipper. We went back and forth a few times about payment, but when I insisted that he wait for a check to clear or wire the money directly to me, he dropped off the face of the earth...

As a buyer, I always use Paypal for deposits. Easier to get it back if the deal goes south. Then cert check for the balance if everything checks out. Just as others have said.

Have him wire the money to your account. Tell him you'll pay the $50 fee

If funds are sent as a transaction "payment owed between friends" I don't think there is anything he can do to dispute etc.

I had someone buy a Saab from us two years ago and paid the deposit via paypal. About a week after they took delivery, I get a notice from paypal that the buyer is claiming the saab engine lacks a turbo and all kinds of other craziness, needless to say they are disputing. Funny because it drove home with a turbo 7 hours to upstate New York when they picked it up.

I called the claims group with paypal, we chatted for a bit and when I mentioned the transaction was for a car, the woman laughed and said they would not cover the buyer for a deposit on a car. It is somewhere in the fine print.

Never heard from the buyer again. Paypal will not allow money in escrow to be withdrawn by the buyer or otherwise disputed if the transaction is for a vehicle.
