pan-american highway trip to Ushuaia

Not sure where to post this, so here it goes.

I'm looking into a trip for my 50th birthday anniversary year, in 3 years. I want to travel in my 1994 NAS D90 (with 3.9l petrol engine) from my home in Montreal to hook up with the pan-american highway on the way to Mexico (see here http://www.go-panamerican.com/pan-am...ighway-map.php ) and then on to Argentina (with a boat hop to avoid Panama's Darien Gap (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darién_Gap ). I will do a separate trip, this next year or the following one to Alaska from Montreal and from Montréal to Newfoundland and Labrador.

I have found some interesting sites about information on the trip to Argentina :

- http://joydrive.ca/

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Looks like an awesome trip. I would love to do that someday, but a more likely trip in our future is Colorado to Newfoundland and Labrador. I think I can get the Wife on board with that one.

Done the Argentina to Colombia, ( rejected by the cartel's friends ) back down through Machu Pichu , then Bolivia , Santa Cruz de la Sierra ( these druglords were a lot more friendly ) then Paraguay, to southern Brazil to Uruguay ( via Chuy ) to final destination Punta Del Este for Vacation .

BTW this was done in a Motorcycle 20+ years ago and was a blast, so I am sure , in the Defender will be twice as nice, have enough $ 20.00 to " Buy Coffee " to the authorities, and if a big jam have a $ 100.00 as they will say " Thanks for the coffee, but I driink Scotch "

I may be overreacting, but if I was going to drive across Mexico I'd have my affairs in order.

An American in a D90 just sounds like a target to me, at least in Mexico.

do search for "la cucaracha carinosa" the first lr to cross darian gap and the first north to south road trip..
this will give you a further idea... of course it took place a long time ago but some of the same politics still apply.

I drove from Austin to Monterrey a few months ago in my Scrambler - no problems. However, I only drive during the day and do not cross at Laredo. There's a crossing about 10-20 miles west of Laredo through a Mexican military base I use. You meet up with the main toll road just north of the toll booth, well south of Laredo. Then it's pretty much 70 MPH to Monterrey.

From what I've heard, the worst is in the northern part. I haven't been south of Monterrey since '08.

Read this book:

It's probably a little outdated but will give you a good idea of what you're up against.
