PA Inspection Stickers

All

I have only lived in the US for 5 years so please excuse my ignorance here. I have a 1989 D90 that has ordinary tags as I want it to be a daily driver. I believe that due to its age it does not require an emissions test, however can someone advise as to whether it needs a safety inspection.

I have looked at the DOT website and it states that Antique Vehicles ie > 25 years of age do not need a safety inspection but it does not make it clear if the vehicle needs to be registered as an Antique with Antique plates or not.

Thanks
Mark

Cant speak to PA but in Maine in order to not require an inspection it must be registered as an antique with antique plates and cannot be your daily driver. You must also have another vehicle registered in state that is your primary mode of transportation.

Sounds similar

In my experience, Cambria County, nothing older than the start of obd2 (1995) requires emission, and diesels are exempt regardless.

You need to get antique plates to be inspection and emissions exempt but that is not for a daily driver. It will need emissions in Philadelphia area counties as well as inspection. Diesels to not get emissions anywhere in PA.

Even though its older than 25 years it will need emissions test?

Yes. 1975 and newer gas needs emissions inspection in philly area counties.

Fewer and fewer shops have the equipment to do pre-OBD2 vehicles, on the plus side, it is static testing because it is all wheel drive (do not let them put it on the rollers!).

I am in Lancaster PA, no need for emissions tests for a diesel, but i do need the safety inspection as i have regular plates on mine. If you go with Antique tags there is no inspection.

emissions testing

In chester county diesels have no emissions testing, anything gas from 1975 -1990 gets a "visual" test where we just look for emissions equipment that is supposed to be on the vehicle, and also do a gas cap test, 1991-1995 gets the 2 speed dyno test/idle test, The dyno/2 speed idle test also changes every year, next year will only be from 1992-1995, so in 4 years there wont be anymore dyno testing at all.
Antique and classic cars are exempt from emissions testing, classics still need safety insp.

Mark your question seems to be why if the vehicle entered EPA exempt ?
Many states don't recognize the federal exemption and treat any registered
vehicle the same regardless.

Well given that you got an appointment that quick I might find myself being extremely lazy or just confused about my issues I might just limp down to them next week.

I am sure you will be fine. 9am is too early for me (traffic) but if you ever want to meet up I am either on the main line in Pa or down in Delaware.

PS I am a tall fat guy.

Headed to State College for the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival tomorrow, NELRC is going to Rausch and Anthracite this weekend as well.
Then there's Rovers on the Rocks at Rausch in November.
Maybe I should have a Rovers and Coffee at my place this fall?
