Over landing or Car Camping

We've been having a few discussion about the distinction between car camping and over landing ... some say over landing is for those that bought their gear from a boutique supplier in japan and car camping is for those that bought their gear in Walmart.

As I'm firmly in the latter camp i was wondering if this could be a replacement for a roof top tent?

IMO overlanding is more of a minimalist approach. Things are smaller and their placement and function more thought out.
Car camping is "throw all the crap in the car and roll into the state park".

overlanding is car camping on your way to somewhere…

Overlanding is the journey - car camping is the destination.

And Overlanding is throwing all of that crap (Snow Peak) in a Pelican case and heading to the state park. Ideally you want to write a trip report when you are done and include some quotes about wandering and not being lost.

Road trip: any trip greater than 50 miles, less than 1000.
Over landing: anything greater than 1000.

Just the way I look at it.

I thought overlanding meant you were going to be off road at least some of the time. What do you call a young guy driving a lightweight 5000 miles and sleeping in the back?

Just waiting to see how this goes, if he didn't have bad luck, he'd have no luck at all!
