Would you believe...

...it got rubber in every gear! Yeah, the tires rolled along the ground, that is! Once we got it primed with fuel, started right up. Had to work with the throttle adjustment to get the revs set for idle. Seemed quite smooth running, but I left prior to the actual test drive. We could only get the starter to crank it by jumping across terminals with a screwdriver while someone switched ignition to start position (engaged solenoid). Still need to sort that bit.

Ok, convinced the starter is just a bad solenoid after cleaning all connections and adding another ground wire. I can get it to start with the key 1/10 times or so.

Kent, I think the coolant leak is either the little triangular blanking plate or the housing for the thermostat. The blanking plate should be a good one to start with - pull and put some right stuff under it and replace, test.

I locked own the throttle cable and adjusted the idle so that's done.

I am out of time until thursday afternoon.

If it were me on Thursday, I would fix the coolant leak, tighten the rear crossmember nuts, put together a filler solution and run down to the muffler shop. The rest is easy and we can even do some at the conclave if needed.

I am sure you can get some extra help at the conclave Kent. Just make a checklist of things to keep track of during your trip out there and try to get there safely. Plus try to have some parts on hand at the event so you can make some more progress when others offer help.

Surely it has got to be more fun to go to an event in a rattle trap Land Rover then to show up in a car and just drool at everyone else's LR. Things will get sorted out over time on your Defender.

Lots of pictures of it at the Cove in the Conclave thread too. If you saw those you'd also have seen that Kent and his new truck did amazingly well on the trails.

We had one minor problem, which was a drag link ball joint nut fell off at some point and the drag link popped out while riding trails on Thursday evening. Fortunately nothing got damaged and with the help of Jason and Jonathan, we got a replacement nut and got her going again. If only someone had taken the time to remind us to put cotter pins in. LOL

He still has a long way to go, but it's officially a runner and he took it home!

Thanks again to everyone for the support and donations.

Jim, I got the knob and catch can thanks. Will see what we can do with the can, but I was also thinking it might be worth trying to fit a nipple on the back of the filter plate. I assume there is a fair amount of suction into the carb - is it ok to have it sucking crankcase air in all the time from a decent sized tub (1/4 - 3/8" I think) or does it need to be restricted?

Really glad to hear Kent got there safe and had lots of fun. That is a high point in all this for me.

Pictures look great but would be fun to see some more here.

I agree Charles to restrict the return hose to the intake manifold somehow makes a lot of sense to me also. With that catch can it will never have trouble breathing though. Obviously it is made for a diesel engine from Allard.

Should I still send the tailgate to your home address Charles? Or Kent do you have an address you want me to send the tailgate to?

Thanks Jim, you rock!

In case anyone in the Raleigh area is watching this thread but not the board as much as they would like, Brewie is trying to get a wrenching weekend going down there to do the cage and bulkhead work:

Still need ST door bottoms. Help!

We are nearing the end of the operation, but need one last push to get the truck there. If anyone out there has some rust free door bottoms, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance!

Kent

Heat gun, razor blade, Goo Gone, and about 4 hours of frustration and cursing.

Not that the truck didn't need a paint job already, but now kinda definitely does.....

When I removed the stripes from my 110 I used a pneumatic eraser. It was awesome.
