At some point our government needs to put on the big boy pants and accept that cyberwar is actually a type of war, just like insurgancy and conventional war.

China, Russia and N. Korear have declared cyberwar with US, just like we declared cyberwar with Iran.

Time to come out of the closet and call it what it is. Tired of this passive-aggressive shit.

Did you read anything about what snowdon revealed? The US is probably going harder at this than anyone. They are just keeping it out of the knowledge of the general public ... To maintain the main advantage in this war ... Secrecy around capability.

Why do you think China wants this data ... ??

Good point, and I didn't say our hands are clean in my original statement. But this is a facet of 21st century assymetric full spectrum warfare and we need to stop pretending it's not. And the US needs to put as much effort into defense capability as they spend in offense. Maybe even more so!

Defense readiness is a legacy of the piss poor technical environments built in the last 30 years since the internet became mainstream. The answer is in zero trust designs where every connection is forced to authenticate. Most environments are built on a trust but verify basis and frankly no-one bothers the verify portion.

The cost of remediating this cluster F is frankly epic ... there is no quick win ... border security models based on the meat zone ( where we live ) are hideously inadequate. All organisations should consider they have been hacked and the bad guys are freely able to examine their stuff. They only find out wellafdter the fact if they are very very lucky.

Most accept this concept until they figure the price and then they just do enough to stay out the press and hope their peers makes the papers ...

Even air gap networks are vulnerable as they get bridged at some point.

Its highly likely that this will be traced to a spear fishing attack ... carefully crafted email, some nice personal details and someone opened a compromised file ...which looked totally genuine and raised no suspicions at the time.

The weakest link in all this cyber security mess is you ... the most effective security policy is to eliminate you from being involved.
