Old Tires

Judging the numbers on the side of this tire - I think this tire was made in either 1994 or 1984.

These tires came with a free rolling chassis and were never intended to be used - but I used them anyway (long story).

Anyway - the tire split on the way home from The Wilds. It was still holding air (it has tubes) but I swapped it out. I pulled the tire out of the back of the truck today and I can see that it has split a fair bit more.

Yep. Had a similar experience. After 5 or so years as a spare, I decided to do a 5 wheel rotation. That was my learning experience about tire shelf life.
After a week or so, the belts separated.

Dave, you've seen enough accidents on the road to known running those shoes is not playing your cards right.

I changed the tire to a good spare when I saw the split on the way home. It kept splitting on its own as it sat in the back of the truck.

New tires were ordered last Monday.

I believe most manufacturers put tire compounds life span at about 10 years or less (not accounting for mileage) I had a set of BFGs that had plenty of tread left, but as they got older they became hard as rock, wet weather performance went down and you could see the cracks appearing - it was little hard to admit they needed replacing as there was tons of tread left, but better than have a tire disintegrate on the freeway or trail. If you are buying tires always check the date of manufacture, as some discount places are selling tires that are a year or two old already.
