Off Topic: Merc Tdi Problems

So, before I go find a Mercedes forum, I thought I'd ask here.

My wife drives a GL320, 2008, CDI. We love the car, and it has lots of power, great MPG for a medium sized, seven seat SUV = 21-28.

Anyway, the check engine light came on yesterday, she didn't tell me about it. Then drove it today. On her way back home she called and said the car was not driving right...

So I took it out when she got home. Starts, runs, doesn't sound funny, and even the little bit of shudder I have felt in the transmission didn't show up. But it is apparent to me that the turbo has bought the farm. It has very little power at lower RPM, but still runs smoothly. And although we don't think about it normally, it is oddly quiet when listening for that turbo whine that should be there. It shifts manually just fine. But say you are level at 45mph, is should rocket to 60 no problem, not now. It's gutless.

So, obviously this needs to be fixed, but I'm wondering if this needs a tow, or should we be OK driving it? Also, could it be some other problem that causes the turbo to shut down to prevent some damage -- high EGT's? A valve that has stuck?

Anything I should know before trying to take it to a mechanic tomorrow? Thanks,

Could be as simple as a failed diverted valve. Sounds like the car is going into 'limp mode' I'd take it to autozone, have the code scanned, do some research before going to the mechanic.

If it's a dealership they're going to charge you the diag fee anyway so it wouldn't be worth your time

Yes, that is a good idea to have it scanned first.

I don't think it is in limp mode, unless that only involves shutting down the turbo (bypassing?); because it will drive 65-70mph no problem. And it allows me to shift manually. I'll read the manual and see if there might be an other notification that would come across the screen when in limp mode, as it is, it is only the yellow Check Engine light.

Have you done any service on the vehicle lately?

Filters and oil change. Done by independent mechanic several months ago.

I just confirmed that it is not in limp mode.

One last question: Would an EGR valve death or clog or leak cause the symptoms I describe of basically having no turbo?

The thing that bugs me is that if a turbo goes, I would think you would not get a Check Engine light 24 hours in advance. That's why I kind of think (hope) it is something else causing the turbo to never spool.

I know MB prides itself on expensive repairs, and sure hope this isn't the case.
If the Turbo isn't pressurizing, wouldn't that suggest either a dirty or stuck waste gate in the open position so exhaust gases bypass the Turbo? Assuming urea isn't depleted, fuel filter not clogged etc.

This isn't a BlueTec.

That makes sense to me, even though I'm only vaguely familiar with what you are talking about.

I'm looking in the direction of the EGR because of the light, and it seems to be a common problem at about 70-100k, but I don't know that it would cause the turbo to not pressurize.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll be getting the code tomorrow, and at least I have some direction to look.
