NY and diesels

Does anyone know if there are issues with DMV and diesels in NY? I have a customer that wants to convert is NAS 110 to 300 Tdi and he can't find the answer.
Any Tdi NY owners here?

Thanks,

Sheki would be a good person to ask about that.

You can do it. Anything pre 96/ODBII is fine. You just need to re-reregister it as a diesel. Good buy inspection!

I am going to convert my 94 soon, and I have looked into it and its all good.

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/vehsafe.htm#diesel :

Emissions Inspection for Diesel-powered Vehicles
Does a diesel-powered vehicle require an annual emissions inspection?

All diesel-powered vehicles registered in the New York City Metropolitan Area (NYCMA) with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 8,501 lbs. or heavier must get an annual emissions inspection. The emissions inspection must occur at the same time as the annual safety inspection. The NYCMA includes the five boroughs of New York City, and Nassau County, Suffolk County, Rockland County, and Westchester County. There are no exemptions given because of vehicle year, vehicle model, or other related vehicle information.

Diesel-powered vehicles with a GVW of 8,500 lbs. or less are not subject to an annual emissions inspection. Diesel-powered vehicles registered outside of the NYCMA are also exempt from the annual emissions inspection

lots of info on that: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/ page

Title amendment form and safety inspection.

Just call the local DMV office, tell them you are doing a repower to an original vehicle.

I asked the lady at DMV what I had to do, and she said just check the diesel box on the application.
Mine is an 85, but like Dan said only 97 and newer have to wiretap about emissions.

Was super simple on my old truck just told the women at the DMV window it had a diesel now and she changed it on the spot no trouble at all.

Also, good to note that all pre-ODBII vehicles only require a visual emissions inspection since NYS made the right call and mothballed the dyno testers.

What they said, ignore what any DMV person tells you over the phone.

these are only the laws for the NY metro area. If you are anywhere in the "upstate area" it is much simpler:

Diesel of any kind and year does not get emissions or OBD2 check. Also over 25 years old, electric, farm operated and motorcycles are exempt.

1996 and earlier diesel only get a safety inspection (brakes have meat, no lights out, horn and wipers) gas vehicles geta "low enhanced" emissions inspection upstate (check to see if you have a gas cap and if you still have cats if the vehicles came equipped thats it..no sniffer)

NYMA= long island, 5 boroughs, westchester, yonkers and rockland

Anywhere starting at orange county and north is considered upstate

The girl at the DMV was questioning me and insisted on bringing her supervisor into the conversation. He came over, listened to her question about titling a diesel S2A, and the supervisor asked her "why are you hassling the guy? Diesels on vintage trucks are fine".
That ended the debate.
