NOVA Optima Battery Group Buy

A local club that a few of the forum members belong to is currently doing an Optima battery group buy if anyone is interested in hopping on board.

Prices are as follows for a Group 34/78:
Red Top -- $145.95 + $10 core
Yellow/Blue Top -- $166.95 + $10 core

Batteries will be delivered to the next club meeting held at Kilroy's in Fairfax on February 13. Charles or I can handle picking up the batteries for anyone who can't/doesn't want to attend (all are welcome and encouraged to come) but you will have to get us the cash ahead of time and we can deliver to the next HH.

They are finalizing orders now so if you are interested we will need you to commit by the end of the week.

As a side note, we will not be picking up any and shipping them somewhere so please do not ask. Just thought we would offer this up to any of the local folks as it is a pretty good deal on these batteries.

I'll just add that if you bring a core (old battery) you save $10.

Locally you will see retail prices for the red top around $175 and yellow/blue a little over $200. You can find deals comparable to the group buy if you shop around online but then have to deal with shipping. ultimately, we are trying to support a local business that does a lot for the local OHV clubs and trail systems.

Hi, Guys. Just noticed your post.

For what it's worth, I just bought two yellow top D34/78s from Advance Auto about a week ago for my split charge setup, and in addition to their regular 10% off for military (for you military here), they also often have discount codes on their website of 15-30% off. You enter the code and pay for the item, and then select local store pickup instead of shipping and get them within an hour or two.

I entered code P20 (20% off and the best one I found recently), and got each of the batteries for $165 and paid NO core charges and kept the reasonably new standard battery that came in my truck.

I've always found that there is a code available of some kind, you just have to look for it on their site or elsewhere online. Additionaly, both here in VA and in FL where I was last, I've always found Advance stores to be really helpful and well-stocked, and I dig the military friendliness.

If anyone is considering buying an Optima battery, I'll gladly take a shit into a USPS Flat Rate box and mail it to you for $165.00. In the end you'll have about the same product.

Mmh, that's going to be a tough sell unless you are offering better specs and/or a lower price. What's the cold cranking amps and c/20 rate on your "product"? Warranty? What about smell? Terminals included I hope.

Optima is junk. They have been for a long time. When they first came out it was a good battery, but things changed. It would not surprise me if they moved production to China around 2006 or so when the failures starting happening on a regular basis.

In late 2009 Optima had a price increase. So what? Well, I think they tried to restructure and get back their good name. The reason I believe this to be true is they changed their warranty coverage. Here is the Optima warranty pre-2009. That's pretty shitty, right? Now look at their warranty after 2009 to present. That's a lot betrer, but you still have limitations. I think the price increase was to cover their ass on returns.

You can buy any battery in the world and it's only going to be as good as its warranty. This is why I like buying batteries from Costco. Costco's warranty is pretty good and returns are hassle free. If you buy a battery in a "group buy", who do you go to when the battery fails?

People also seem to think they NEED a dry-cell or gel-cell battery. Most people don't. I bet 80% of the people on the forum don't need the battery they have. They just buy it because they think they need it.

Optima's are junk. If you even get 3-years out of it you're lucky. Talk to your local Battery Mart or Batteries Express and ask them what they think of Optima batteries. Chances are they'll try to steer you to an Orbital for less money. They do this because they know Optimas are junk.

If you feel you need a dry-cell or gel-cell battery for what ever reason, the better option is a Sear's PM-2. Some claim it's the same as a Odyssey battery. Maybe it is, maybe it's not, I don't know. But they are good batteries with a good warranty. They're $25.00 more than an Optima, but they're worth the additional $25.

Search about Optima batteries. Dweb has a lot of info on them. So does Pirate and many other club forums. They suck.

I'm very surprised anyone still buys Optima considering the better AGM spiral cell (Exide) and AGM plate (Odyssey/Diehard Platinum) batteries that have been available for quite a while.
Plus, at least for now, with the others you get to buy US made batteries, rather than from Mexico.

Although not quite as emphatic about it as DC, I am in total agreement with him on this point.

Do yourself a huge favor and buy a Deka AGM battery. They can be mounted in any orientation but upside down.

I also agree. I have dual yellow tops and they'll be my last. Overland Journal did a full comparison of top batteries for overland use, and the editors value award went to Sears Odyssey Platinum, just after I bought one for my wife's DII when her Diehard to a dump on her. The Odyssey is raved about on expo portal, and everyone there has the same opinion of Optima as here.

I have no experience with the Deka's, but given the availability of the odyssey's when on the road away from home, I'm a fan.

Murph, thanks for the reminder about the military discount at AA. I completely forgot! That's bad news for local autozone.

Remind me to never start a Group Buy here.... tough crowd...

For what it is worth... I've never had an issue with Optima in any color and / or combo set up.

Yes, we definitely derailed this thread! I only commented because I was the only forum member left that hadn't, and I was feeling left out!

On a serious note, I think it's great when club and groups like ROAV leverage their membership to do things like this. You just picked one of the 3 hottest topics in the forums I frequent.
  1. "What's better? Toyota or Land Rover?"
  2. "Do I need a snorkel?"
  3. "Need a new battery, should I get an Optima?"
