New Rover Roadtrip - Bought Ron's POE

So anyway, I'm going to Russia for the next year and need something that will handle Russian roads and not look too flashy.

I decided to buy Ron's old POE truck (now a ST) since it was cheap and I didnt have to do any searching, negotiating, inspecting etc.

Anyway, I flew up to Ron's place, and we pulled the truck out of hibernation. It was nice to see Janey again. It was also interesting to check out the pile of leftover parts from one of ECR's restorations.

The tickford top wasnt going to fit in the approx 30 degree cold snap, so I went hard-core and rolled all the way back down to Georgia with the bimini and tonneau. I had to stop at REI in DC to buy more gear to keep from dieing.

Things went great until just after dark, then there was a buzzing like I hit a rumble strip, and I thought "crap, wheel bearing going out." Then all hell broke loose under the truck. I pulled off the road to inspect the situation. Turns out the rear u-joint on the front propshaft grenaded. No big deal, just pull it, lock the case and roll on in 2WD. Not so fast, now the truck wont start. Turns out the propshaft hit the floor so hard that it not only punched a hole, it knocked the computer off the bus connector and sent the EFI relay shooting out through a rust hole in the floor. Luckily, when you buy from Ron, he sends you home equipped with the one extra part you actually need. He had given me an extra relay in case the fuel pump relay went out (it was giving trouble earlier). I replaced the computer, plugged in the spare relay and fired her right back up.

I did all this diagnosis by the light of my cell phone since I forgot to bring a flashlight. As luck would have it, I was 500 yards from a rest area, so I limped in and pulled the shaft under the big lights without having to worry about being flattened by passing traffic.

Made it home around 0130, a bit later than expected but it was basically a perfect Rover day!

Man you sure get around. Seems you are traveling to a different coast a couple times a year.

Yeah, I move around a lot. Its a fact of life when working for Uncle Sam. If I ever go through Kansas I'll have to swing through and see you.

That reminds me, I guess I need to talk to you about trading a roll-cage bracket. I guess you also want 20 bucks. Yes, Ron successfully offed this problem on me. Thats OK, I stuck him with the bill for dinner

Wish I'd known you were doing this -- REI is a mile from my place. Sounds like a fun trip and congratulations on the new rig!

I think I've got one or two stock front shafts if you want one.

Jim,
You gonna sell that thing in Russia? From what the rumor is they fetch enough to get a new one in the US (I mean a new grey market one).

Anthony - I stopped at the REI up in College Park, so I was on the other side of the beltway. I was pretty much trying to make time. Thanks!

Johnathan - I would take a stock shaft if you have one. That will be easier than shipping one.

Pendy - So if you're not feeling Ron, can I still get a bracket, or is this a set-up?

Jesse - if someone wants to give me long money for a NAS 90, they can have it, I certainly dont have to get much to make money on the thing. On the other hand, there are always rumors flying around about how Germans will pay big $$ for muscle cars, Saudis will pay huge money for Caprices, etc, and I've found that people typically know what stuff costs and dont want to pay extra.

JimC,

You should have taken the free clothes I offered. They would have been big but they would have been warm. And yes folks, I did send JimC with exactly 1 spare part, the silver relay.

Phone conversation:

Ring ring goes ron's phone JimC calling:

Ron: Hi Jim, you make it yet? [ever optimistic aren't I]

Jim: No front driveshaft blew up.

Ron: Well pull it and put her in diff lock. I will mail you a new one on monday.

Jim: Would love to put it won't start, computer came undone.

Ron: Plug it back in. Does it crank?

Jim: Yup. But there is an empty relay spot.

Ron: Well that is normal, there is an empty relay spot on the fuse panel. Maybe the computer is damaged?

Jim: Humm.

Ron: Try fiddling with both silver relays

Jim: Both, there is only one.

Ron: That empty relay spot. Plug in the relay I gave you.

Jim: Will it work?

Ron: Yes, they are both the same, EFI and Fuel Pump.

Jim: Ok.

Ron: Can you pull off and pull the shaft?

Jim: Looks like there is a rest area 500 yards ahead.

Ron: Ok.

New phone call:

Jim: She starts, got it pulled all ok. Is there any speed limitation on 2wd

Ron: Well don't go dropping the clutch and breaking an axle, and it will handle different, but you should be fine. I knew a guy who ran in 2wd for years.

Jim: Ok

Ron: Sweet, more adventures in rovering.

Jim: Yup, it is just another great rover story. I would have been ticked if I had to have it towed, but thanks to the relay.

Ron: Nah, even without the relay I would have had you jumper a couple terminals or use a yellow one from the AC.

Jim: Ha!

Ron: Good luck!

Jim: Cool man, see you later.

Ron

PS Yes, Pendy, I know $20.

Ron

PS I am keeping the 110 aircon but I am sure mike at ECR will have one soon for you and cheap.

It's funny how we have semi-private conversations on a public forum ironically making them completely non-private.

Ron is a slacker. Of the worst sort.

Ron you owe me more then 20$ and interest is compounding.

Slackers never learn.
